and was the basis for the easily rattled George Costanza. Like George, David has a tendency to speak too much, blow things out of proportion, and, most often, fail in the end (and often liking it that way). David's new show is also like its predecessor; it's about "nothing" except following the day-to-day ramblings of a sometime writer and comic (this time in LA). Eternal questions stemming from universal daily dilemmas are honed to perfect comedic absurdity. A notable exception is that the show is only scripted by plot; much of the action is improvised. The first season starts with a one-hour mockumentary following David's return to stand-up for the first time in years. The other 10 episodes follow a more traditional sit-com setup. David plays "himself" (as does his friend, Richard Lewis) although his manager and wife are played by comedians Jeff Garlin and Cheryl Hines. Although this first season is a comedic gem, one can't take more than an episode or two at a time--it's caustic, biting comedy. The episodes are often built like a house of cards, which the irritable David will surely collapse by the end. --Doug Thomas

Advantages: Wonderfully realised show from a comedic genius Disadvantages: Some may find the bad language and adult storylines a bit too much
...HBO special entitled 'Larry David: Curb Your Enthusiasm' was aired in which HBO approach Larry and ask him if he wants to take part in an hour-long show detailing Larry's move back into stand-up comedy, the 'warm up' shows he performs and culminating in the 'special' performed before a huge audience. Larry, becoming increasingly worried by the day, eventually lies to the studio about the illness of his non-existant step-father and thereby hoping ... ...with a commetment from Larry David that a series would be written to follow it up. This single episode is available on the complete series 1 collection as well as an interview with Larry himself in which he explains his formula for creating the shows and offers insights into the complex world of fact and fiction he finds himself caught between.
In the show Larry is a millionaire, living with a beautiful wife and home, and seemingly without a worry ...

Advantages: Larry David is a very funny character Disadvantages: Can be EXTREMELY offensive (but then that's part of its charm)
...and an edge to it. CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM certainly fits that category and certainly wouldn't be to everyone's taste, but it certainly fits mine.
Larry David is a US TV producer and writer in real life. He co-created Seinfeld, which I must confess I've never watched, and is listed by Guinness as having earned a grand total of $242 million dollars in 1998 through his work on the show.
Clearly never has to work again a day in his life, but instead ... ...was around the time that the original version of THE OFFICE was very popular, and my comparison was always with that - if you can take the bad taste humour that sometimes arose in that show, you will no doubt enjoy watching Curb Your Enthusiasm.
I heartily recommend it. ...

Advantages: Its the best show ever! Disadvantages: None
...successful american sitcom in history. Curb is basically a day in the life of Larry who was personified as George Costanza in Seinfeld.
Larry seems to get himself into somewhat uncomfortable positions with alarming regularity whether he likes it or not. Be it his lack of social skills or ignorance he can't help but piss people off and get himself into a whole heap of trouble in the process.
Now as an HBO show the bad language is all left in which ... ...sitcoms and the freedom allowed to David and his cast is evident.
Another remarkable fact about this series is that it is predominantly improvised. A basic show is outlined then the actors basically ad lib around that idea which is what helps with the spontaneous laughs that this show gives.
Rather than gloss over this remarkable show with a quick general review i'll give you a snippit of what you can expect from each episode:
Episode 1: The Pants ...

Advantages: No holds barred comedy Disadvantages: ummm...?
When I first happened upon this show in a late night slot on BBC4 I was somewhat bemused. I had never heard of it and wondered if maybe it was actually a documentary or a fly on the wall type of Big Brother thing.
In fact, it is a partially scripted sit-com where the characters actually play themselves.
Larry David is best known as the co-creator of Sienfeld, a show which was written with his life and experiences as the major plotlines. In this ... ...degree which the watcher can find incredibly uncomfortable and yet so funny.
Larry David's laconic style and almost laidback manner is reflected in his attitudes. He refuses to get dressed up, he won't tip if he doesn't think someone deserves it and he never seems to really do any work and yet he can get incredibly wound up if his trousers don't sit right.
This first series is a perfect introduction, but you will become hooked. And at nearly £40 ...

...those who haven't seen it, Curb Your Enthusiasm is an HBO TV
series from the co-creator of Seinfeld, Larry David. The series in fact centres
around Larry David, or at least a warped semi biographical version of Larry
David. This is one of the features that seperates Curb Your enthusiasm from
other sitcoms. It is set in a bizarre world between real life and some surreal
comic twilight zone in which Larry David (the character) finds himself
surrounded ... ...for Larry David\'s real wife. Curb your Enthusiasm is a
brilliantly witty show that revels in the lack of restrictions licenced by HBO,
often tackling extremely taboo subjects that other sitcoms wouldn\'t dare. For
instance, there are two episodes in the first two series centred around the word
c***. This is by no means a family show like Friends, but if you have a fairly
dark sense of humour and like your comedy a little more cerebral, then ...

You thought your life was bad. Try being an incomprehensibly successful writer with a gorgeous wife. Unfortunately for Larry David, co-creator of Seinfeld, four hundred million dollars and the woman of his dreams (Cheryl Hines) are no match for the constant turmoils that wreak havoc on his daily life. With the help of his manager Jeff (Jeff Garlin) and best friend Richard Lewis (Lewis, playing himself), Larry tries to maintain some semblance of order, but when trouble seems to find you everywhere, that isn't so easy. CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM is, quite simply, television at its finest, a brilliant and hysterical work of comic genius that absurdly, yet seamlessly, blends reality with fiction.
