It was essentially, a low budget horror/thriller, with poor unknown actors. But for some unknown reason, it worked. I far one am a big fan of the original, which kept you gripped to the end, even though for the most part you were staring at a white room, with very little going on in it.So, when cube 2 : hypercube came out, I for one was quite exited.
For those of you who do not know the original, a brief rundown of the plot would be that a group of eight people are put into a huge contraption, with the bizzarre aim of trying to get out alive. They were put in without consent, or prior knowledge. But, they were put in for a reason, as each one held a particular skill, or a piece of knowledge, that may help them escape. Basically, from there the 'contestants', continue through the maze of identical cube shaped rooms, and slowly go mad. Some rooms contain traps, some contain horrific scenes, and some are safe.
Now that you know the plot for cube, you also know the plot for hypercube. It would seem that the film has been given a bigger budget, which they threw at the film to give it better effects, and slightly worse acting. Again, we see eight 'contestants' put in a huge contraption, with the aim of getting out alive at the expense of the others. The tag line for the film tells us that this time there are no rules. So, where you could at least follow the first film, you certainly cannot follow this one.
As the name suggests, this time the people are not held in a giant cube, but a hypercube. A hypercube is a theoretical shape, that it is not possible in our dimension. It is a real concept, and mathematicians have studied it for years. Basically, it is a four dimensional cube, and involves seeing the 'hidden dimension'. If you imagine two living circle, on a sheet of paper. They would see eachother only in 2d (a flat line.). Similarly, although we live in a 3d world, we see only in 2d (we see surfaces, but not volumetric shape.). So, supposedly, in the theoretical 4d world, you would be able to see 3d images. You would be able to see all of an object at once, the front, the back, the inside, and the outside, and all angles of view at once....
Got that?
Good. So, that is the basis of the film. In a 4d world, we cannot begin to comprehend what might happen. This is why the film tells us, that this time there are no rules. That said, I personnally think that this is a rediculous notion on which to base a film. If anything can happen (and it does), then you cannot build up suspense. The acting is wooden, though believable enough. You never really build up any relationships with the characters, which is a big thing for me.
The film is ok, but you will not want to watch it a second time. The only thing that you will understand throughout the film, is that the end will be the only interesting part. Once you have seen the ending once, it suddenly loses its appeal. The film looks lower budget, than its lower bugdet predessor. The film stars no-one you know, and their performance will not make you want to ever see them again. I would only suggest that you watch this, if you were a fan of the first film. Otherwise, stay clear.
Advantages: Follows on from Cube superbly, good concept and story, some good characterisation Disadvantages: support acting not strong enough, spoiled atmosphere at parts
8 strangers wake up in cube shaped rooms, each one of them from different backgrounds, possessing different skills which are part of the solution to their predicament “solve the code and you escape, but only the first … that’s the rules”. Recognise this story? Very similar to the first movie at first glance, but wait, this time there’s an added aspect thrown in … Time itself.
The Hypercube of the title is a theoretical construct, a 4 dimensional ... ...the way for the second Cube sequel, Cube Zero, scheduled for release some time this year (although I really can’t see what else they can throw into the mix now that they have had both space and time in there). If you enjoy the B-Movies of the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s, then this one is for you (Even with the problems, I enjoyed it), but if you’re more of a mainstream movie type person, then it would probably be better to give it a miss. ...

Advantages: Interesting group psychology. Good special effects. Disadvantages: Strange sense of humour sometimes... Less exciting than The cube 1
...some people trapped in a cube and they have no idea about how they got there. Only this time they're trapped in a hypercube, which is much more complicated than an ordinary cube. There are lots of different rooms that look exactely the same and the people trapped in the hypercube do their best to figure out how to get out of there. Some rooms have traps, deadly ones, that the "prisoners" one by one are victims to. As time passes and they can't find ... ...get out of. Unlike The cube 1 the end is like an anticlimax.
I wouldn't recommend you to buy this film, unless you're a "fantasy-freak". There are some real good special effects and it's not a bit like reality, that's for sure. For example there's a room where time passes extremely fast. If you enter it you're practically dead in seconds. In spite of the defaults that I've found with this film, it's not bad. It's just that having The cube 1 to compare ...

Advantages: different from most films, good acting Disadvantages: confusing, too weird for some
After watching the first Cube film at a mates house and being highly amused by the 'honking' of the winner I though id buy the second one in the hope that it would give me a few more cheap laughs. It's a good film and even if you're not interested in the plot there's enough entertaining bits to keep you watching.
*The Trailer*
"The first one had rules" you'll be sick of hearing this phrase after watching this film, so not surprisingly it's all ... ...cheesy and doesn't really do Cube 2 justice. This is one of those films that you can't explain, you really have to watch it in order to appreciate it. Furthermore I think the trailer gives the film away too much, especially for those who have seen the first one and know what type of thing to expect. Personally I could tell straight away who the 'winner' was going to be and the trailer actually showed quick clips of characters dying so you could also ...

Advantages: Not as bad as they say it is Disadvantages: The worse cube movie
Cube was a classic movie. It is one of my favourites for three reasons. Firstly, it's original - a series of interconnected cubes which move around, genius. Secondly, it showed that a good movie can come from a very low budget. Thirdly, it was simple. The storyline for cube is so simple that you could explain it in one sentence (indeed on the box they do just that). So could a sequel live up to this work of genius?
Well it COULD have. But unfortunately ... ...leave me thinking "wow" like cube did.

The Story
---------------------------
Several people get trapped inside a cube and have to work out a way to get out. It turns out that this cube is in fact a hypercube. It's got 4 dimensions. It can alter time within it and cubes can move through each other. Starting to sound a bit rubbish yet?
To reveal much more about the story would be to reveal the whole of the plot. This ...

film. Anyway, working together they figure out a way of going into rooms without traps.
SPOILER
If any of them really did have any intelligence then they would realise someone would of put them there in the first place so putting them in the middle of the cube would be a hassle so they would of put them at the start ie - the finish. Simple and logical really. I dont mean to be big headed but I worked that out within 23 minutes of the film.
END OF SPOILER
Towards the end they could 'escape'. Wether they do or not you shall have to see, the end you will find somewhat interesting.

This is the first thing I watched when I got a DVD player - The Up In Smoke Tour, featuring Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem and Ice Cube. This DVD contains 2 1/2 hours of live tracks , skits and backstage footage from some of the most influential rappers of our era.
Ice Cube kicks off the DVD, coming to the stage in a giant ?ice cube? and performing ?Hello? amongst others. After the set, we see some backstage footage featuring Cube and others before Eminem takes the stage to perform ?Kill U? and ?The Real Slim Shady? to name just a couple.
The real action starts with a 5 minute movie clip featuring Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg. This leads straight into their set which also features Eminem and Xhibit.
If you are into hip-hop music this is one of the best DVDs you will ever buy and it is worth every penny. ...
