Cruel Intentions, 97 mins approx, UK Rating 15
This 1999 movie set out to bring Les Dangerous Liaisons into the modern day; stepsiblings Katherine and Sebastian take sibling rivalry to another level as they make a bet on whether Sebastian can steal the virginity of their new headmasters daughter Annette Hargrove. If he fails Katherine will get to keep his jaguar and if he succeeds he wins the one thing that he can't have, her. On his way to accomplishing his goals Sebastian comes across some boundaries and does all that is needed to get rid of them, poor, young innocent Cecile is just one of the people who gets trampled on in his process. This in turn pleases Katherine, as she wants to reap revenge on Cecile as she is dating her ex boyfriend Curt. But once he gets closer to receiving his prize does he really want it? Can he put an end to the manipulating stepsister Katherine who has been pulling his strings like he was a puppet?
The film has been rated a 15 as it contains scenes of a sexual nature including a very sexy scene between Katherine
(Sarah Michelle Geller) and Cecile (Selmia Blair) when they share a lesbian kiss tongues and all. There are also some very sexy scenes between Sebastian (Ryan Philippe) and Annette (Reese Witherspoon) I think that they're off screen passion for each other has also been translated on screen in this film.
Director: The director of Cruel Intentions is Roger Kumble in 2000 he also went on to direct Cruel Intentions 2 and worked as a writer on Dumb and Dumber, Kingpin & There's something about Mary.
Cast: Sarah Michelle Geller plays Katherine Merteuil, Katharine is a rich bitch, she is used to getting everything her way and people obeying her commands. Society sees her as some kind of martyr and she has been put up on a pedal stool. She believes that Sebastian her stepbrother is in love with her and decides to use him to reap revenge on others. Sarah Michelle Geller has lost her trademark blonde hair that she is known for through her part as Buffy (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and has dark black hair and a pale complexion for the character of Katherine.
Ryan Philippe plays the part of Sebastian Valmont Katherine's stepbrother; Sebastian has built up a reputation for himself as a womaniser and uses sex as a weapon against woman. He sees women as a challenge he must complete and he usually succeeds but not when it comes to Katherine his greatest challenge of them all. Ryan Philippe is very charming and sexy as Sebastian and makes it easy to understand why women find it hard to resist him. He is married to his co-star Reese Witherspoon.
The lovely Reese Witherspoon plays Annette Hargrove, Annette is a straight-laced all American girl who has strong values about saving her self until she is married. Her father is soon to be the new headmaster at Sebastian and Katherine's school so she moves into the area to get to know people, she soon meets Sebastian but will she stay true to her self? Reese Witherspoon is perfect for this part with her classic good looks, she is married to co-star Ryan Philippe and they have two children together. She has since one on to star in many hit movies like Legally Blonde and Walk the Line for which she recently won an Oscar.
Selma Blair plays the young Cecile Caldwell; Cecile is young, innocent girl who is sent to Katherine to learn the right way to behave like a lady. Cecile however is in love with her Cello teacher Ronald, but dating Katherine's ex boyfriend Curt. To get her revenge Sebastian and Katherine soon corrupt poor Cecile. Selma portrays the clumsy naive character of Cecile brilliantly; she has since gone on to have roles in Legally Blonde alongside Reese, and The Sweetest Thing next to Cameron Diaz.
Other characters include Joshua Jackson as Blaine Tuttle Sebastian's gay friend; I have to say Joshua is looking little different with his bleached blonde hair than his character of Pacey from Dawson's Creek. Eric Mabius as Greg McConnell Blaine secret lover and Annette best friend and Sean Patrick Thomas as Cecile cello teacher and secret love Ronald Clifford.
Conclusion: I enjoyed this film it had a well thought out story line and good characters, everything was tied up nicely at the end and you were not left with any questions. The acting was great with some fabulous young stars that have since gone on to achieve great things.
Buy on Amazon for as little as £3.97.
