This film was originally recommended to me by a friend and I just had to see it. The film is based on the book by Choderlos de Lacios entitled "Les Laisons Dangereuses" On seeing the film originally on Sky television I was very impressed with it and immediatley went out and bought it.
The Characters
Kathryn Merteuil (Sarah Michelle Gellar) Kathryn is filthy rich. She is maipulative and spends her time ruining other peoples innocent lives. She is popular and also class president at Manchester Prep. When times get difficult she "turns to God and he helps her through it"
Sebastian Valmont (Ryan Phillippe) Sebastian is Kathryns step brother and he works together with Kathryn to ruin innocent people's lives. Sebastian however is sick of the young women he has easily seduced and sets his sights on the new headmaster's daughter, Annette.
Cecille Coldwell (Selma Blair) Cecille is new money and also the new girlfriend of Court (we never see Court but he is the ex-boyfriend of Kathryn) Kathryn wants revenge for being dumped at the 4th July picnic and decides to do so through Cecille. Cecille considers Kathryn her best friend and does as she says. She is innocent naive and stupid. Kathryn wants to ruin her by making her the new Machester slut by using Sebastian to speed up her sexual awakening.
Annette Hargrove (Reese Witherspoon)Annette is the new headmasters daughter. To Sebastian she is the bet. Annette is a girl content on staying a virgin and feels that at her age she i too young to experience the act of love. Sebastian sees this as a challenge and tries to seduce her but it proves harder than he expects.
Plot
The film is based around Sebastian and Kathryn. They spend all their time ruining innocent peoples lives. Sebastian makes a bet with Kathryn that he can sleep with the new headmasters virginal daughter before school starts. The bet is simple; If Kathryn wins she gets Sebastians jaguar and if Sebastian wins he gets the one person he cant have and desperatley wants Kathryn. Kathryn however wants revenge over her ex-boyfriend Court who dumped her for Cecille Coldwell. She feels that the only way to get the revenge she so desperatley wants she must destroy Cecille. Kathryn relys on Sebastians help to give her a "sexual awakening" and Sebastian at first resists but soon agrees to help. However it seems that Cecille is falling for her music teacher Ronald and so Kathryn uses this to destroy her. She firsty tells her mother who ends their relationship and her and Sebastian act as the lover's messengers altering the love letters as they are passed on. Sebastian starts his task to bed Annette but it proves harder than he first expected. Annette brings out a side of Sebastian that is not shown to the world; She makes him laugh. They then end up falling in love with eachother. Kathryn sees this and dislikes it. She then sets out to ruin their relationship resulting in a hugely dramatic ending which i won't ruin.
The Soundtrack
The soundtrack deserves a huge mention as I feel it is a huge asset to the film. It contains a variety of music styles and features artists such as "Placebo", "Counting Crows" and "The Verve" The soundtrack is modern and adds huge effects to the scenes in which the music is used.
I would recommend this film to anyone. The quality of the acting is brilliant and the chemistry between the actors is immence. The obvious chemistry between real life couple Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe proves an asset to the film and is great to watch. I must admit I'm not a huge fan of Sarah Michelle Gellar in "Buffy" or "Scooby Doo" and I sometimes feel as if her acting is a little off but in this particular film I fell that she portrayed her character excellently. Like the film's slogan says: Deliciously Evil, Wickedly Sexy!

Good op. You've told me all I could need to know whilst still leaving something for me to find out and not ruining it for me.

good op, although I feel you've given away too much of the plot. Also a mention of the director might be useful and a comparison to other fims of the same genre. Let me know if oyu update, and I'll rerate. lp
Advantages: How good the actors are and how class they make this movie to be.And how no special effects are needed to make this movie how good it is. Disadvantages: wasnt long enough lol
