Well I’ve finally got around to reviewing this film! I’ve been meaning to review this film ever since it was showed on TV the other month. Oh well, better late than never I guess!

Up until I saw this film on TV I’d never actually heard of it before so, in case you don’t know either….
You can watch the trailer here:

-------------------------------------------
WHAT IS CRUEL INTENTIONS?
-------------------------------------------

Cruel Intentions is a modern remake of Dangerous Liaisons (the 1988 film which apparently was one of the best films of the decade). Cruel Intentions is actually the fourth adaptation of Dangerous Liaisons since it was initially published in 1782, having not been around in 1782 I really can’t go off the original version (sorry!). I can only go off what this film was like on its own.

--------------------------------------------
WHO’S IN CRUEL INTENTIONS?
--------------------------------------------

Sebastian aka Ryan Phillippe (isn’t he just gorgeous?)

Kathryn aka Sarah Michelle Geller aka Buffy

Annette aka Reese Witherspoon

Cecile aka Selma Blair

Blaine aka Joshua Jackson aka Pacey (Dawson’s Creek)

------------------------------------------------------
WHAT’S CRUEL INTENTIONS ABOUT?
-----------------------------------------------------

Basically the plot revolves around a few teenagers (mainly Sebastian and Katherine) who attend a posh boarding school. Sebastian is known across campus to have the ability to ‘get any girl he wants’. Needless to say, when a new girl joins (Annette) (who has incidentally vowed to remain a virgin until she finds true) the school his stepsister, Katherine, sets him the challenge. He has no qualms about this at all and is convinced it will all go to plan and sets off trying to seduce Annette. In exchange, Katherine is to take his swanky sports car if he doesn’t succeed while Sebastian is allowed to, and I quote, “put it anywhere” if he wins! That’s it really. Sound a bit dull to you?

-------------------------------------------------
HOW DID SARAH_LOUISE FIND IT?
-------------------------------------------------

Well I actually found it whilst flicking through the Weekend guide one week and noticed it in the movies section!.… Sorry, couldn’t resist!

At first I found it a bit boring, it took me a while to get into it. It sounds really dull when you write what its about in just one short paragraph (although many films would sound dull under those circumstances!). I didn’t find it too dull (put it this way, I sat through the whole film and actually got into it after the first 30 minutes or so).
It is definitely a teen movie, there’s no doubt about that. I don’t usually go for the teen type movies (I’m more into horror and comedy’s) however this wasn’t too bad at all. I think the best way to decipher how good (or bad) a film was is to ask yourself “Would I watch this film again?”. So, would Sarah_Louise watch Cruel Intentions again? I would. I liked the ending of the film in particular but I did get into the story line. There are some faults with it though, for example, although they were in a posh boarding school, it was released in 1999 and hence set around about that time so surely there’d be far more swearing? Generally they all seemed to speak with a bit too much of a posh twang. This is only a tiny fault though and I did forget all about it after the first few minutes. Secondly, as regards the wager I mentioned early, forgive me if I’m wrong but surely most step brothers and sisters wouldn’t actually want to “put it anywhere”?! I don’t know, maybe I’m wrong here! I know she’s Buffy the vampire slayer in her other life but still!

------------------------------------------------------------
WOULD SARAH_LOUISE RECOMMEND IT?
------------------------------------------------------------

Yes and no really. Yes in regards that I did get into it, it wasn’t bad at all and for the girls out there, any film with Ryan Phillippe in has GOT to be good!
No in regards that it was a bit too predictable for my liking although I hadn’t predicted the ending so it did end on a high note.

The sound track wasn’t bad either featuring Placebo, Fatboy Slim, Blur, Faithless, The Verve, to name just those who I’ve heard of!

I’d give it a rating of 4/5.

There is actually a sequel to this, aptly named “Cruel Intentions 2” (gee, you’d NEVER have guessed that would you?!). As yet I’ve not seen this though so I can’t compare it to this.
