I have never read Les Liaisons Dangereuses, I have never seen Dangerous Liasons, therefore Cruel Intentions was of no adaptive inaccuracy and certainly no disappointment. I believe in the ideas of sex selling everything and I also believe in the concepts of beautiful people creating ticket sales, (Ocean's Eleven), however it also takes a little extra to bring it all together and make it worth your money. You need the electricity, the real sexiness, the good versus evil, the plot, the sub-plot, the love story and if you are provided with this is 97 minutes, it doesn't make for a bad movie.
The leads are played by the young Reese Witherspoon and real-life love Ryan Phillippe and Sarah Michelle Gellar with suppporting roles played by a clumsy Selma Blair who does so with a wonderfully amusing etiquette, a gay Joshua Jasckson, bisexual jock Eric Mabius and an overprotective, stereotypical mother played by Christine Baranski. This strong cast combine and fit the pieces of a would be jigsaw puzzle perfectly.
There is in the movie a plot and a sub-plot. Both of these stories however are built primarily to reflect the characters character type and being. The main plot circles around a bet between Kathryn and Sebastian (Phillippe). After reading a magazine, he reads that the new headmasters daughter, Annette (Witherspoon) is to remain a virgin until she falls in love everlasting. The bet states that if he can't bed Annette before the Summers out, Kathryn get's his vintage Jag, if he does, he can finally sleep with Kathryn- his stepsister, and more than that, he can "put it anywhere". The bet is on, however the plot thickens as he falls in love with Annette.
The sub-plot surrounds Cecile, who caused Kathryn to be dumped by Court Reynolds , it is now Kathryn's intention to destroy her reputation before she begin school in September. She initially asked Sebastians help but he refused, however upon hearing that her mother, Mrs. Caldwell, (Baranski) had been badmouthing him to Annette, he decides to join in.
The plots evolve quickly and the movement is fluid. The soundtrack is flawless and the sexual tension is sexual with Kathryn and Romantic with Annette. The ending is not everyones cup of tea but it's perfect on the concept of good versus evil and good winning out. This film is one of my favourites, I enjoy the dialogue and the fact that I have watched it probably a dozen times and still find it intriguing says a lot. Cruel Intentions may not be for everyone but it is certainly worth having a look if only out of curiosity.
