With a high profile cast and a new low high street price this product is better value than ever. This black comedy has a certain reputation courtesy of a few select scenes.Despite this there is an intricate satisfying storyline.
It is a story of two half-siblings; Kathryn and Sebastian from a rich family and their battle through sexuality and power games to gain the upperhand.
Kathryn having been dumped is devastated to discover that her Ex is now interested in an immature young rich girl called cecille. In her Anguish she requests sebastian to deal with the problem by seducing Cecille and getting her away form Court (The ex)
Sebastian unimpressed by the lack of challenge for his charms in seducing such a girl refuses claiming he has bigger fish to fry. The bigger fish are a girl called Annette Hargrove the daughter of the headmaster at Kathryn and Sebastian's school. Annette recently having written an article on why she intends to wait [on having sex] is what sebastian considers, worthy attention of his charms.
Kathryn scorns him by saying that "this, is even out of your league" so a bet between the manipulative siblings is the result. Sebastians 1956 Jaguar Roadster (a NICE car) vs Sebastian getting what he has wanted since his father and Kathryn's mother marry...Kathryn in bed.
The film revolves around Sebastian's pursuit of Annette which transcends his original immoral desires and Kathryn's attempts to damage Cecilles's life.
Sarah Michelle Gellar proves that she is capable of more than vampire fighting with this film. Certain scenes have gained a rather pro-male following but that should not detract from the fact that this is a great film and Michelle-Gellar's maleavolence is marvellous in the role.
Ryan Phillipe surprised me somewhat he plays a particulary cool turning to heartfelt role which gained much admiration from me.
This gives the film a powerful storyline about how difficult it is for someone to change themselves but that it can always be done.
This film has everything: attractive actors, great soundtrack, great storyline.
The package is completed by the extras that can only be found on the DVD;
The deleted scenes each offer a slightly different perspective to the film. The one regarding Sebastians questionable sexuality is best left cut but is certainly worth a watch.
The soundtrack includes several great songs, some from artists such as Counting Crows that are not well know in the UK. It was thanks to this film that I became a strong fan of theirs despite colorblind not being indicative of their usual musical style.
The Director/Producer commentary is not as thorough as some have been but it does provide genuine insight on the making of the film and will make an interesting diversion for any film buff or wannabe director. Further information can be gleaned from the behind the seens featurette showing how the film was made and how the actors really interacted.
In addition to these positive points the packaging unlike many DVDs is of a high standard and not one of those tacky cardboard affairs but instead a lasting plastic form.
I highly recommend this product both for the film and the extras included. This gives it advantages over the video alternative
