This is an epic tale, which brings an amazing Chinese story into the main-stream, if you allow it.
Dismiss this unique tale (atleast to Western film circles) as a meaningless 'beat em up' karate film, at your peril and personal loss. The story is an intricate and finely woven tale of love, good versus evil and trust in magic and legends, set against stunning backdrops. If you did dismiss it narrowly as I did at the cinema stage, don't miss out now its on a plate on DVD.
Set in the 19th century Qing dynasty, Chow Yun-Fat masterfully plays Li Mu Bai a.k.a (fittingly) Master Li, a Wudan warrior ready to relinquish the all important 'Green Destiny' sword (Made many years ago in the time of the Chin dynasty) and give up the warriors life, perhaps for the love of Shu Lien (played by Michelle Yeoh) although neither initially confess their feelings.
The other romance, a comlicated and aggressive affair, centres around Jen (Zhang Ziyi) and Lo, but as her wedding day approaches, the hitherto absent Lo returns to spice things up further at the 11th hour, as if it was required!
However fate does not want to let our man hang up his ...sword so quickly, as the Green destiny is stolen after Li attempts to return it to his mentor Sir Te in Beijing and its retrieval and return to safe hands takes Master Li on one last mission. Sinister forces are at work too as Master Li's nemesis, the poisenous (!!!) Jade Fox complete with a surprising 'understudy' (It couldnt possibly be the opulent daughter of nobleman Jen..could it??) continue to use the stolen Wudan manual for bad.
Queue gravity defying stunts and amazing scenery and a relentlessly braeth-taking battle begins for Master Li and foe, and you've got an unmissable film on many levels, And if the cantonese language and subtitles are too much like hard work, the DVD allows the whole epic to be dubbed in English, alond with interviews with Michelle Yeoh and behind the scenens of the stunts, who could ask for more.
This isn't your usual hollywood or Kung Fu action flick, but isn't that a good thing!? Enrich your collection and remember 'a true heart makes wishes come true'.

I've only ever seen parts of this, but what I've seen looks pretty impressive. I think my mate has it on DVD, so I'll have to borrow it and give it a proper look..

Advantages: Great fight scenes, pretty well written and directed, story rich in substance, breaking into the western market Disadvantages: subtitled, nothing new, too dramatic and poetic if you're not into the sort of thing, the storyline can be confusing - so watch carefully!
