Right, i'm going to be honest here. I though this film was over adulated. Dont get me wrong, it was absolutely beautifully shot, the fight scenes were stunning and for those of you who have never been exposed to Hong Kong cinema before i would still urge you to see it as it is a fine example of outstanding cinematography and choreography. But for veterans of Hong Kong cinema who have been spoilt by such films as 'The young master', 'The legend of Fong Sai Yuk', and 'The Prodigal son' to name but a few, the difference in content is obvious.
For a start the subtle humour was lacking. Even in serious HK cinema, the little touches of humour lighten up proceedings and add to both the characters and storyline. And where was the constant threat of the major bad guy?? The wizened old crone just didnt do it for me, and i found the character of Jen to be very annoying. The main characters story lines were lacking in real substance and real conviction that is always apparant in other HK films. I suspect that this was because mainstream western audiences may have been put off it if had been labelled as hardcore HK cinema and not as a cinemagraphic language film.
As it stands, i hope that it will encourage those new to the genre to check out the many other films on offer in eastern cinema. It will remain an influential film as it was recognised by The Academy, and as a lover of the Genre, that can only be a good thing.

I agree with you. Sorry about the lower rating, but you don't really say anything about the plot, characters. . .what you did put is fine, but just needs a little more for a higher rating. Give me a shout if you update it ;-)
