I've been watching chinese culturally based films since I was a kid, mostly Hong Kong films. CTHD has attained very good reviews from many critics and cinema goers alike. I, myself do not see what all the fuss is about. First the plot is very weak. Basically the story is about a Wudan warrior called Li Mu Bai (Chow Yun Fat) who gives up his sword, the Green Destiny, in hopes of retirement from the martial arts world. However the Green Destiny is stolen by the character played by Zhang Ziyi. Bai's love interest is Michelle Yeoh and together they track it down and uncover the whereabouts of the killer of Bai's master, Jade Fox, which happens to be Ziyi's master.
The martial arts in the film are nothing special, just mainly wire work. I think that it has received rave reviews because the western audience isn't used to this, ask any Asian movie fan and they'll tell you its nothing new. The fight scenes just haven't the extra edge as with Jet Li or Jackie Chan's earlier movies. The fights seem more like dances.
The scenery is the films strong point, with beautiful shots of Chinese countryside. The films score is also very well produced. Ang Lee directed this film for the western audience and it shows.

I watched this film on video as I thought I looked too bad to see at the cinema. I found the special effects awful. It worked in the Matrix because it wasn’t set in the real world, this was the real world and I found myself in stitches because it was so unbelievable! Good op

I saw this film for the first time the other day, but I thought it was brilliant. It reminded me a bit of other classics such as Once Upon A Time In China etc. To be honest, I thought the fights in the film were excellent, but were actually secondary to the story and characters rather than the main focus. Cheers.
