So, I have broken my own own rule of buying a DVD before I have seen the film - this will remind me not to do it again!
So, on the back of all the hype, I order myself the DVD - I am already impressed with Chow Yun Fat after watching Anna And The King - and looke forward to its arrival.
3 days later and it's here. Isert the disc, press play and the soundtrack defaults to Mandarin! Not a great start I thought.
So the plot is basically, Great Chinese warrior renounces his warrior ways and gives his legendary sword, Green Destiny (a very flimsy item considering some of the things it does in the film). Sword gets stolen by a young female in disguise - identity of female discovered very early in the film! Great Chinese warrior does battle with various enemies, old and new to regain his sword.
The story is very disjointed although manages to keep hold of the basic plot by the slimmest of threads.
The fight scenes are expertly choreographed and the well shot. The visual effects are stunning however some of the leaping about the roofs left a little to be believed and would have tested even the mighty Jonathon Edwards.
Overall a watchable film, but I think that you will need to goes at it.
Chow Yun Fat and co. give resounding performances and having seen it myself I can understand how it got it's Oscars, however, if this had have been pitched to a Hollywood studio I can't help but feel that it may not have been produced.

Good op. I think Jonathon Edwards sounds like a good name and I think its spelt 'its' not 'it's' at lest that's what Russ says!!

Well written and informative op, hence the VH rating, but could perhaps do with some info on any DVD extras? Thanks, Karen

Why avoid this? Although I havn't seen it yet, I have heard nothing but praise for it. As for the jumping around in the trees, this harks back to the ancient Chinese legends which tell of amazing watrriors with super powers etc, it isn't done because Chinese people actually think they can jump around in trees! Cheers.

Advantages: Beautiful shots; excellent performances; fantastic fight scenes Disadvantages: Incredible? Felt like quite a long film - perhaps too long? Some may not like the subtitles
