Ok so not many crouching tigers and the dragon sure was well hidden but what an epic! The film is directed by Ang Lee and co-written by James Schamus and is a truly epic film of great proportions.
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is so good and on so many levels as it serves as: 1) An historical epic 2) An martial-arts flick 3) A tale with fantastic fight scenes(choreographed by Yuen Wo Ping of Matrix fame) 4) A story of magic 5) A story of revenge
Set during the Qing dynasty, 19th century, the film follows the warriors Li Mu Bai (Chow Yun-Fat) and Yu Shu Lien (Michelle Yeoh. These two love each other but keep their feelings to themselves and in turn deny their love.
However, disaster strikes when Li Mu Bai's legendary sword, Green Destiny, is stolen Jen (Zhang Ziyi), who has been trained in by Li Mu Bai's arch-rival Jade Fox, and so the warriors must fight to recover the powerful sword. We are taken on a fantastical journey with epic battle scenes in the air, up walls, everywhere! Though some scenes are supernatural, such as the flying scenes, this all adds to the mystery and wonder of the film. This was one of my favourite fims and my review really doesn't do it justice. if you haven't seen it try to! If you can't get it on video or DVD as it is definately a film to keep.
The film itself is in mandarin but there are subtitles and if you don't usually like subtitled films, I recommend you persevere and watch this great film.
