This film is at the same time a subtle, beautiful story couched in a martial arts epic and a silly watch-me-fly peter pan type plot with long, boring bits between the storyline. Was it Pride and Prejudice or Enter the Dragon? It seemed unable to decide.
Ostensibly Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is an intricate story with a human side and mythology wrapped up into glorious, if few, fight scenes. The humour manages to aviod the shallow slapstick prevalent in the genre, and in the end the hard to swallow invulnerability of some of the characters is revealed to be more realistic than in any martial arts film I'm ever seen. And yet the most memorable thing from the movie was the bloke four rows in front of me who, during the critical scene at the end where the eternally nearly lovers are facing each other, waiting, pitched forward off his seat and bonked his forehead on the theatre floor. Sometimes staying awake is as much a skill as running up a wall.
