A brilliant film. The story the actors, and the effects...they were all amazing. I watched this film twice and both times i found it very entertaining and enjoyable. I find it very rare to find a chinee film make it intothe UK cinemas and i normally have to struggle to find any places that sells videos and the rest... But anyway...
The basic plot of the story is when a well-known Wudan warrior (played by Chow Yun Fat) gives up his 400 year old sword as a symbol to put down his past and live as a new born human being. But things never work that way and when he finds out it's too late to turn back. He gives up his sword to well known guardian of the country and at the same time a powerful governer is visiting. By the sequence of events i thought at first it was the governer who wanted the sword, but as things turnedout it was the governer's daughter who stole the sword for FUN and when she tried to return the sword it was too late things have got out of hand. I'll stop here and leave you to watch and find out the rest. But the story evolves around the sword.
It's a story about love, hate, and revenge. And this film combines all this very well. The special effects of the film was great, but i thought it was a bit exagerated personally. In the history of chinese kung-fu, there is a form of flying but that only lightens the step of the human being and does not allow people to fly as it did portray in the film. Some people have discussed the sowr being a symol of power, but that isn't strictly true, only people who think that they will benefit from it will develop a lust and greed to own the sword, but like the main character of the story, even without the sword he is able to fight and win. It teaches tht it's the way you use something rather then having a need for it and not being able to use it properly.
The sound to the film is great and it goes very well with the atmosphere and the scene of the film. And the scenery that they chose to use in the film was breath taking, it really is great and it just shows off the fact that within China there are still beautiful sites about that one can still find if they look. I watched the subtitled version and many may say that the meaning of the original dialogue maybe lost but i can tell you that it's a near perfect translation. Maybe the names is a bit hard to grasp but still the same meaning is there.
After recieving 14 BAFTA nominations, and actually recieving a few awards, ithink the people has done it justice and it goesto show that standard of chinese films is rising.
