It was the closeups that enchanted me first, the beautiful faces of Chow Yun Fat and Michelle Yeoh. Not flawlessly made up Hollywood faces by any stretch of the imagination, but full of humour and wisdom and experience, speaking volumes of emotion that made the English subtitles completely unnecessary. The body language of these two people, their hand movements, the way their eyes spoke to each other, transcended mere acting. Michelle Yeoh in in fact one of the most incredibly agile Martial Arts performers in the world. I had never imagined she could also sink into the skin of a character and let that character shine out through those beautiful eyes. Chow Yun Fat is already known as a heavyweight in the acting stakes, but not so much as a Martial artist. That's more the territory of Jet lee, director Ang Lee's first choice for the role. But there is more to the character of Li Mu Bai than just the warrior. He is a warrior who has crossed the Rubicon, and no longer wants to raise his fabled sword, the Green Destiny, in war. So he entrusts it to Yu Shu Lien (Michelle Yeoh) to take it as a gift to an old friend. When we first meet these two, we realise they share a deep unspoken love. Yu Shu Lien has taken over the courier business of her late father, but she too is a warrior. This we realise when the sword is stolen and Yu Shu Lien goes after the thief, leading to the first of many amazing Martial Arts scenes. The Martial Arts is woven into the entire magical fabric of the story, part of the interaction of the characters and the majestic scenery. A subplot involves a Mongol warlord and Jen, a young girl who is not all she appears to be. From the mystical jade mountains of China to the vast red desert, this movie sweeps you along with passion, tragedy and humour. You will never forget the closing scenes, or the emotional, heartfelt performances.
