I've just completed my BA (Hons) Scriptwriting for Film & Television degree at Bournemouth Uni. I got a 2:1.
Perhaps I could have got a 1st if I'd written fewer opinions on Ciao and paid more attention to my final script. Curse this site!!!

Could this film really live up to all the hype? Countless five-star reviews? Breathless "best-film-of-the-year-and-the-year-has-hardly-begun!" type hyperbole? I was doubtful, and, having seen the film twice, I can honesty say that I don't think it's an absolute classic.
For a start, those "ground-breaking" fight-scenes. Very impressive choreography, granted, but really no different to what the Hong Kong film industry has been churning out for decades, albeit with a bigger budget. As for the fact that the main characters can fly - fine, but it could've been better. As it stands, they look as though they're being hoisted.
Then there's the subtitling. Not the most subtle translation. In fact, it's often downright clumsy. Seeing as this is an adaptation of book five in a six book series (or something like that), there is a certain amount of back-story to get across, but couldn't they have managed something better than clunky lines like "I must visit my master's grave. It has been eight years since Jade Fox murdered him!" The scriptriter's rule is "show, don't tell", and they'd have been wise to ashere to it. Such dialogue is no better than the aforementioned typical Hong Kong kung-fu flicks of yore.
I will concede, however, that the film does possess a certain something. The cinematography is stunning, especially the climactic shots, which will stay with you for days. The fact that the story favours strong female characters should also be applauded, and Michelle Yeoh and Zhang Ziyi are both excellent.
I do recommend this film, but I think we should wait until further into 2001 before we get too excited.
