I think I am about to be castigated for my opinions on this film, but I came away disappointed in what I saw on the screen. Now as a bona fide movie buff, I went to see this film with open expectations. It wasn't the fight scenes that I was seeing this film for, it was the fact that most "eastern" films have great and gripping plotlines - and that is the reason I came away feeling empty.
Sure, the fight scenes were great, no problems with them, however, the actual plot itself dragged, and didn't live up to they hype which has been bestowed on the film in general. So much so, that when I left the cinema I actually went home and stuck "Seven Samurai" in the DVD player to "cleanse" myself with a decent plot.
Don't get me wrong, I am not saying that it is a bad film, it really is quite good, but look beyond the fighting and the wire-fu sequences and what is holding it all together is just a little flimsy.
Performances were generally very good, with both Chow Yun Fat and Michelle Yeoh being totally believable in their roles.
To me, the film seemed like Eastern Cinema "lite", as an introduction to the fine films of Kurosawa et al. it is good, but if you are looking for more depth, and in some cases more action, check out films like "Seven Samurai"; "Kagemusha"; "Ashes of Time" etc..
