Say you're going to see a subtitled film to most cinema goers and their nose will instantly turn up. They normally invoke images of boredom and painstaking high art films which are more deep than Loch Ness.
Yes Crouching Tiger is a subtitled film but it's also an epic which delivers on a lot of levels. The plot involves a mystic sword that is stolen and starts off a whole chain of events that tests the honour of many characters. Because of it's translation into english you may not grasp the story completely as some of the lines lose their meaning when out into english. Some of quite laughable as well. However there is so much to look at that this is a film which could really play without any dialougue.
The look of the film is amazing and should definitely br a front runner for the cinematography oscar come March. Every landscape has ambience and rich colour.
The one thing people have highlighted though is the fight scenes which are out of this world. The people involved such as Chow Yung Fat and Michelle Yoeh are trained in martial arts deeply. Everything is fast paced and so intense. It's almost like a well sequenced dance routine. When weapons are involoved it just ups the danger but the moves are so precise. People bounce off walls, float over rooftops and flip over things with such pace. All this is culmitaed in a fight that takes place in the trees which really has to be seen to be believed.
There is a romantic back story which is'nt the most easy thing to follow but is so engrossing to look at it doesn't matter.
Ang Lee has crafted a film which will without doubt grab the best foreign film oscar this year and may actually get some other nods. He has certainly proved that he is the one of the most versatile directors working today.
Some will wonder what all the fuss is about and find it quite boring. It can be difficult to follow but give it a chance and it will blow you away.
