I had no idea what I was in for before seeing a crouching tiger and a hidden dragon. The film was recommendended to me by my Religious Studies teacher. For A-level, we have to study Buddhism and my teacher himself is Buddhist. All he said was:
'The martial arts were fantastical, yet the message was supreme'.
I sat down with popcorn in hand and was welcomed to China. The desert and the cities.
The film displayed how focused and emotional fighting can be. In contrast to mindless bloodshed. I don't know the budget, or the time it took to film. That has never been one of my interests. The result however, captured not only my full attention, but also that of a silenced audience.
Subtitles can sometimes put me off a film, especially if I know I'll be watching it for over an hour. Yet, the storyline was so enveloping that I forgot I was reading. Some of the time I wasn't interested in what the charcters were saying. I wanted to watch the pace of the fighting and the reactions to it.
As an audience we were taken from a welcoming cave to a mighty mountain above clouds of mist.
I came out speechless because I gained so much. This film is more than fight scenes. It shows the effect of not creating long term damage to an oponent, and certainly not to underestimate a woman's shiao (or power).
The popcorn was unfinshed at the end and I can't wait to buy it on general release.

Argh, women are supposed to have something like 7x the pain threshold of men - still doesn't convince me! Needles, jabbing at skin. Maybe after a couple of glasses of the old red, red wine.
