Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Wo hu zang long) is a film of great artistic and cultural significance, as for most people in the west it will be the first non westernised chinese movie to hit the cinemas, at least in my film watching lifetime. Die-hard Martial Arts nuts have had to get this on video, importing them themselves, no less.
It will be very interesting to see what is made of this film by the movie going public.
The Plot is:- Famous warrior (Li Mu Bai) seeks enlightenment, unable to do so he decides to entrust his equally famous sword to Sir Te. While in the keeping of Sir Te the sword is stolen. Enter the baddy, Jade Fox, a notorious criminal who killed Li Mu Bai's Master. Yu Shu Lien (friend of Li Mu Bai)helps to track down the bad guys. With one or two twists.
This is where all the fun starts, chases across ancient Peking rooftops, running on water, and balancing on branches no thicker than a pencil all add to the charm of this epic.
If you are into Van Damme and Steven Segal movies you are in for a shock, this is how China make Martial Arts Movies, and this is how they should be watched.
My only gripe is that it is not at enough cinemas nationwide, but that is the fault of cinema chains and their shortsighted, money hungry, how many bums can we get on seats attitude. This film deserved every BAFTA it received, and I hope it does as well in the Oscars, which in my opinion can be a lot more fickle about forgein films.
