BACKGROUND... Three years ago something happened that caused quite a stir worldwide - Britney Spears, pop princess extroadinaire, fell off her pink and glittery throne, and critics everywhere smiled with glee. Yes, Britney Spears had floated along on her silver cloud for far too long, and although these critics, who seem to hate to see too much success in others, had tried their best to slate her singing career, so far their efforts had amounted to nothing against the loyal devotion of Britney’s fans and her consistent stream of number one hits.
Now, however, something had happened to put a dent in this otherwise gleaming career - Britney had had the cheek (how dare she?!) to accept an offer to do a film. It seemed that people who would normally just say “it’s not my cup of tea” if faced with this exact film had it featured a “real” actress were now rushing to the cinema in their thousands, dying to see Britney fall flat on her face. You can almost hear the sighs of relief, therefore, when it turned out that this film was no more than a girly, feel-good flick which showcased Brit’s quite adequate but not yet Oscar-level acting skills and, pen and paper at the ready, they prepared to launch their attacks, seemingly now smug in the knowledge that Britney may have the looks, the money, the number one hits and be a worldwide singing success, but they could be secure in the fact that “at least I never starred in a film that flopped”. The film became a bit of a joke to them and subsequently people have never really given it much respect.
I am not saying any of this to devalue the opinions of anyone who has not enjoyed this film as everyone has their own tastes and they are free to label it the worst film ever made if they so choose, I am just attempting to explain why this film may have had such a cool reception by some and why you should, if you have never seen it, give it a chance.
Let’s put it this way - who here reaches for a packet of crisps when they are suffering from chocolate cravings or cooks up a big pot of chilli on a boiling hot summers day? Who delves in to a Victorian novel because they really fancy reading some chicklit? No one, right? These things are all acceptable in their own right but everything has its time and place. Yet people who would never normally watch a chickflick or teen movie in their life still willingly rent or buy a pink-encased DVD featuring Britney Spears, about three girls who take a road trip, and then complain about the lack of “serious” actors, the lack of a “serious” plot and because it’s simply about, erm... three girls who take a road trip!
I think the trick with this film is just to take it in the spirit that it is intended. If you want to see a film with Oscar-winning actors, there are thousands of them, if you are in the mood for an intense action-packed thriller then, again, you can take your pick, but this is a girly bit of fun featuring Britney Spears, that is intended to make you laugh, make you smile, and most of all, entertain.
THE CAST... This film is - did I mention? - BRITNEY SPEARS' (Lucy) debut film role. It also stars TARYN MANNING (Mimi), a twenty eight year old singer and actress who has also starred in “Cold Mountain”, “Eight Mile” and “Crazy/Beautiful” amongst others; ZOE SALDANA (Kit), a New Jersey born actress, also twenty eight, who has appeared in “The Terminal”, “Guess Who”, “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” and “Get Over It”, to name a few; and ANSON MOUNT (Ben), a thirty three year old actor from Tennessee whose past jobs include roles in “In Her Shoes” and also an appearance in an episode of “Lost”, apparently. DAN AYKROYD, star of films such as, to name but a few, “Christmas with the Kranks”, “50 First Dates”, “Pearl Harbour” and “My Girl”, also has a significant role as Lucy’s anxious, success-driven father, Pete Wagner, and KIM CATTRALL, most famous for her part as Samantha in “Sex and The City”, also pops up for a small role as Lucy’s mother, Caroline.
THE PLOT... The film begins with three young girls - Lucy, Kit and Mimi- burying a box of possessions in the ground, each unaware of what the others are burying, and with each possession representing what the girls want most in the world. The girls, following the burial, make a pact to meet up together on a certain date and to dig up the box. It is on this date (the day of Lucy and Kit’s graduation) that we next meet the girls, all of whom have grown up and grown apart. Lucy Wagner is a kind-hearted yet meek, studious girl who is torn between her love of music and her desire to please her father. Kit, however, has developed a snooty arrogance and is focused simply on marrying her fiance, Dylan, while Mimi is now friendless and directionless with a “white trash” reputation and a baby on the way. Mimi, despite her problems and the state of her friendship with the girls, is the only one who remembers about the box and it is her who eventually persuades the reluctant girls to meet with her and fulfill their pact. The girls dig up their possessions and are confronted with their childhood dreams, which pushes them to commence a road trip together with their friendship still in tatters but their hearts full of hope. The girls begin a journey of self discovery and rediscovery of each other, and soon find that pursuing their dreams does not bring them all that they had anticipated.

RECOMENDED AUDIENCE... I am a big Britney Spears fan - did you guess? - and although I have offered some subjective opinions I would not recommend the film to everyone despite my own personal feelings and will say, objectively, that I would probably not, as I alluded to earlier, recommend the film to those who would not normally watch chick flicks or teen films and those who like a lot of action in films, not because it is not a good film but because it is probably not suited to your personal tastes as the film is quite gentle and dialogue-based rather than fast-paced. I would, however, 100% recommend this to: a) Britney Spears fans (obviously!) b) girly girls, c) fans of chick flicks, teen films and romcoms and d) those looking for a nice, lighthearted and entertaining film.
WATCH WHEN... you need cheering up and reminding of the nice things in life (friends and family and happy endings) or are tired and want a straight-forward, entertaining plot. It is a great film for girl’s nights in.
WATCH IF YOU LIKED... Legally Blonde, A Cinderella Story, Clueless.
IF IT WERE FOOD IT WOULD BE... Candy floss. Sweet and light.
IF IT WERE A COLOUR IT WOULD BE... Pink (of course!)
IF IT WERE A SEASON IT WOULD BE... Summer. Bright, happy and carefree.
WATCH WITH... The girls. Or a big tub of haagen-dazs.
SUMMARY... This is - no laughing! - in all honesty my favourite film ever made. I personally think that Britney is a proficient, skillful actress but even if she were not in the film I would love it. It shows female friendship and family relationships in a warm and moving way, has some genuinely funny moments and has the sort of ending that would make any chickflick proud.
Advantages: Nice and warming. Predictable and safe. Disadvantages: Predictable and safe.
I know she’s still doing it, but do you remember Madonna’s foray into the world of acting? Yeah, exactly. There are a load of musical acts which have taken their chances with acting, much in the same way as some actors have released singles. A good few years after Madonna’s first movie, Desperately Seeking Susan, our very own Anita Dobson (A.K.A. Angie Watts) released a hideous song based on the EastEnders theme tune called Anyone can fall in love. ... ...singles chart in the August of 1986 and I think it goes some way to prove the theory that sometimes-awful things have an unusual appeal.
Britney Spears, sugary pop princess, has starred in a movie. I thought I’d have to break it to you like that, there’s no other way of skirting around the issue and, when my boyfriend announced “I want to watch that Britney Spears movie,” I felt a clear urge to emigrate. After considering this for a while, I decided ...

...criminal? In other words, CROSSROADS has no redeeming values or insights, and seems to just want to depend on B.S.'s image and singer stardom to draw her fans in to see this. There is a sequence early on where B.S. unnecessarily strips to underwear, about to have sex with ANOTHER boy, her lab partner that she has grown up to be friends with for so many years. This is the scene that made me upset and it would last until the end of the film. The reason ... ...all that "hot", and she runs off to this criminal that she HARDLY knows and does it with him. And yet there is an advantage to that: it only proves how shallow she is in the film (and real life). This is also a good time to say that shortly after the film was released, she attended a nipple-piercing contest in So. Cal. and said later in an interview, "These are going to be very popular!!!" Here is my question: How popular can they get.....YOU CAN ...

On hearing that Britney was releasing a film my immediate thoughts were oops she did it again. I'm not what you would call Britney's biggest fan and I find her music a bit like cheesy pop and decided to give her film a miss. A few of my friends ventured out to see it all with differing opinions on it still all leaving me uninterested over it. She is quite innocent and naive but she is the one who holds the group together. Mimi (Taryn Manning) Mimi is the pregnant girl, shes a complete loser at school. Most people are probably aware that pop princess Britney Spears has recently released her own movie - Crossroads... **~~WHAT'S THE FILM ABOUT?~~**
The film opens on three little girls: Lucy, Mimi and Kit, aged about 10. The bury a box underneath a tree which contains all their dreams for the future and they vow to always stay friends. They plan to open the box at midnight on their high school graduation. Cut to years later, the day of the girls ... ...that the girl's have grown apart - Lucy (Britney Spears) is Little Miss Perfect...a straight A student who everyone teases for being a virgin. Kit is the popular girl, the girl, who she thinks, everybody wants to be. She's engaged to a guy at UCLA. And Mimi is pregnant and a branded loser. Lucy and Kit had no intention of going to open the box at midnight. They're pretty much enemies now. But, naturally things happen and all three girls turn up to ...

Advantages: Enjoyable for a young age range Disadvantages: Bad acting, ridiculous storyline, cashing in on Britney's stardom
...to see her debut film Crossroads and when I first saw it I loved it. Crossroads was shown on TV recently and I felt compelled to record it as I had only seen it once previously so I was desperate to see what I would think about it all these years later. Crossroads was released back in 2002, back in a time when Britney could do no wrong; she had a gorgeous and safe boyfriend in Justin Timberlake and her career was going from strength to strength. ... ...in a way it was, Crossroads was bugged with so much critism from every angle imaginable and for someone who had risen to fame so quickly and been led to believe that she could do no wrong it must have been a huge knock for Britney when her film didn’t become the worldwide success that she must have predicted it would be. I do however think that the critism towards Crossroads was justified and it wasn’t just the critics trying to knock her confidence. ...

►►► Opinion
For a film which on paper looks like it has a rather strange fantasy storyline and of somewhat limited appeal, "Crossroads" is a remarkably enjoyable film with a much greater appeal than initially presumed. The simple reason for this is that it combines two of Hollywood's favourite storylines with great effectiveness but puts them in a situation which is a complete change to where they are usually used. Firstly we have the master pupil element of the film, an element that star Ralph Macchio is more than familiar with as it was the one which was the driving force behind "Karate Kid", the film which raised his celebrity profile as well as being used in numerous other movies. In this case we see Macchio's character once again ...

With live favourites 'Sound of Settling', 'The New Year', and 'We Looked Liek Giants' played in their entirety, along with rarities like 'Prove My Hypothesis' and 'Styrofoam Plates' the DVD offers Death Cab fans and casual viewers alike the opportunity to witness the band's carefully honed craft of live performace, where the songs come to life, as opposed to many of their contemporaries who seem to sacfirice precision for performance. With Death Cab for Cutie, in this DVD and on the John Byrd E.P (recording during the tour documented on this release), the listener gets both and isn't disappointed.

parallel, to put such a big concept on the screen is admirable and is most likely the sole reason for the success of the film.
The film, although not incredibly deep, does have a moral, and the ending left me and I am sure most viewers wondering which plot was for the best, it also left me with the feeling that even though small events can change the path of lives we all end up at the same crossroad anyway (that is my deep thought of the day) and if you have seen the film you will know hat I mean by this.
The DVD
The DVD is just a film, mine does not have any particularly interesting extras, just an interview with the director, and obviously being a laid back British Romcom there is no need for special effects!

DVD Description
Pop sensation Britney Spears makes her film debut in this sparkling teen road-trip adventure. Spears stars as Lucy, the beautiful valedictorian of her small Georgia hometown who has lost touch with her childhood best friends Mimi (Taryn Manning), a boyish trailer park sweetheart who happens to be pregnant, and Kit (Zoe Saldana) a luxury-obsessed overachiever who dreams of marrying her older boyfriend. Although it seems that they are all headed in separate directions, Mimi's planned cross-country trip to Los Angeles in hopes of securing a recording contract brings the old friends together for a life-altering adventure. Lucy's own dream of reuniting with her estranged mother (Kim Cattral), who abandoned her and her auto mechanic father (Dan Aykroyd) when Lucy was only three, propels the normally cautious Lucy to take part and together they hit the road, chauffeured by Mimi's handsome loner friend Ben (Anson Mount). Their journey is plagued with many seemingly insurmountable difficulties, beginning with major car troubles that cost the girls all of their money to fix. However, they are able to raise more than enough money to pay for the repairs in a karaoke competition where Lucy (in Britney form) wows the crowd with a sexy rendition of Joan Jett's "I Love Rock 'n Roll." As the young girls head towards Los Angeles in Ben's 1973 Buick convertible they face love, heartache, and loss while distancing themselves from childhood innocence in this heartwarming coming-of-age tale filled with plenty of moments for megastar Britney to shine.
