Opinion
*********
To be honest, when "The 40 Year Old Virgin" first came out, I was not overly interested as I had never heard of Steve Carell, the star, and thought it would be just another juvenile gross out comedy. But after reading numerous rave reviews I thought I should give it a go, and I am glad I did. Yes, the humour is at times very juvenile, but it is unlike your run of the mill gross out comedies, with the main emphasis of the humour coming from scenes that poke fun at Stiltzer's inexperience, rather than some gross out joke.
* The Story
The actual story to the film is pretty plain but has an unusual set of circumstances. Watching a film about a bloke and a woman fall in love would seem pretty run of the mill, except for the man is an inexperienced 40 year old, who is totally inept at dating women. In fact ...
Advantages: amazing vocals, wonderful harmonies, thought provoking lyrics Disadvantages: one song is slightly dated, but still fun as a trivia piece
The following op was written as my entry for the 29thCandidate's "Dinosaur Rock-Off"; a tribute to the memory of rock legend, John Entwistle, recently departed bass player of The Who, and a true artist in every sense of the word.
And speaking of true artists, as a group, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (and even without Young) may not have recorded many albums, but they certainly were artists of the most true kind. Their forte was in their composition and delivery of their songs, with a mixture of voices that blended in unsurpassed harmonies. No other group of artists contributed so much to the genre of Rock music, with so little output. Yes, little output. All told, this group has only put together a handful of albums. And when I say handful, I mean just that - this quartet only released five albums, and one of them is of a live ...
Advantages: lots or great songs, rare versions of certain tracks Disadvantages: a couple of bad choices in song selection.
Carry on is an extended greatest hits from Crosby, Stills and Nash. this two disk collection contains 37 songs from throughout their careers including some tracks taken from various side projects and sole efforts, along with previously unreleased versions of some of their more well known songs.
this isnt really the album for someone who isnt a die hard CSN fan and you are left wondering whether all the songs are really justified in being in this collection. saying that, the general standard is very high indeed with such classics as 'woodstock', 'suite:judy blue eyes' and 'our house' mixed in with rarer tacks like 'to the last whale' and 'dark star'. the real joy in the collection are the different versions to songs such as 'lee shore', 'guinevere' and 'helplessy hoping'. for the CSN fan they will bring a new level of appreciation to ...
