Not here as much - you will see me elsewhere on a R&R site, but I'm not finding the time to come here as often. I will still pop across and do the occasional review.

CSI started out with CSI: Vegas, and this is the 2nd spin off from that. The main difference with this compared to the other 2 programs is that it is undeniably darker in tone, grittier and gloomy.
You soon find out that the lead CSI is a no-nonsense First Grade Detective Mac Taylor played by Gary Sinise.
Mac is a former Marine from Chicago, and he is a someone who works to the rules, but has little time for bureaucracy, which can cause him problems with his superiors. But his ability in the field and leadership quality is such that he is tolerated. His attention to detail is second to none and it pays off a number of times. This quality to details is also something he presses his staff to maintain.
The rest of the team comprise of Stella Bonasera (Melina Kanakaredes) who is undeniably about the closest friend Mac has in the department. It is through her you begin to realize Mac lost his wife in the 9/11 disaster. Stella is his second in command. Tough and uncompromising in her own way, she is a perfect foil to Mac.
The other two in the main team are:
Danny Messer (Carmine Giovinazzo). A bit of a jack the lad character, with a bit of an eye for the girls, he is also a bit of an enigma, having some previous connections to a local Gang that appears to be in direct conflict to his position of work. The other investigator is Aiden Burn (Vanessa Ferlito). She is street smart, and works form instinct a lot. Still learning a lot on the job, she does seem to take some jobs to heart more than others do, becoming too emotionally attached at times. Lastly there is the coroner, Sheldon Hawkes (Hill Harper). Good at his job, and takes a keen interest in the CSI aspect of the work. Ultimately wants to become a CSI rather than a coroner in the department.
A no-nonsense cop called Don Flack (Eddie Cahill) who often liaises with the department is also another main character. Like Mac, insists that rules are followed, and at times covers for Mac when he defies some of the bureaucracy, knowing it will help solve the case by doing so.
The cinematography is dark and gloomy but with tinges of lighter moments. The characters are very well developed, and the criminal and scientific elements are of the standard you've come to expect from this franchise. Episodes tend to all stand alone, so could be viewed out of some order, but to gain better understanding you would be advised to view in sequence.
If you love CSI:Vegas, you shouldn't be disappointed with CSI:NY!
