Advantages: great action and special effects .. lots of extras Disadvantages: could have been a better ending
Its sort of "Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea" meets "Close Encounter Of The Third Kind" and is a brilliant action/suspense/special effects effort from James "I-love-water-movies-let's-make'Titanic'" Cameron.
The DVD release gives you the original version seen in cinemas and the longer special uncut edition that makes better sense of the story by making more of the sub-plots.
There is plenty of conflict and tension in this film to keep you on the edge of your seat with some nice special effects thrown in.
Basic Plot:
A nuclear submarine sinks after encountering unknown technology assumed to be Russian and a rescue attempt is mounted by a team of oil-workers/divers based on an experimental submarine drilling rig aided (?) by a group of Navy Seals. There are no survivors in the sub and tension between the USA and Russia ...
Advantages: Intelligent and well made Disadvantages: Too long
"The Abyss" is my least favourite of James Cameron's films (but then I haven't seen "Titanic"). It has a lot going for it: its suspenseful underwater location, wonderful effects and a decent plot as the protagonists find an unexpected intelligent life form. Unfortunately it also contains some dreadful sentimentality, and the film spends far too long revealing its subjects. I haven't seen the director's cut, but how anyone could have thought the film would be improved by making it longer beats me.
I would hardly describe the film as a failure, as its good points makes it little short of astonishing at times, both through its effects and its plotting (there is one superb sequence where one of the characters deliberately allows herself to drown to save her husband in the hope that he can revive her afterwards). But I think that ...
created from the voice after the people have been recorded speaking about a topic. The creatures take about three weeks to make from a wire frame and plasticine. The creatures don?t actually think they are animals or realise where they come from or what their limitations are and this makes them all the funnier, especially as the directors have worked very hard to humanise them as much as possible with their facial expressions and by making the character fit what the humans said on a topic and not the other way about.
The DVD itself contains seven Episodes. These are

DVD Description
A boating trip turns into a nightmare for five teenagers when they happen upon an abandoned yacht. Curious, the teens hop aboard, and two, Bob and Julie, decide that the yacht is a perfect place for some illicit lovemaking, despite the presence of a bizarre biology laboratory. Unfortunately, the amorous couple become infected with radioactive plankton, turning Bob into a flesh hungry monster who greedily devours his lover. Soon, other monsters have come up from the deep to hunt down the three remaining teens.
