Although it would be easy to portray the last queen of France as an empty-headed bimbo obsessed with frocks and jewellery, Coppola creates a more rounded portrait. She shows her as a lonely little girl and then young woman utterly unprepared for her role, friendless and cast adrift in an unfamiliar world. She and Louis-Auguste may not have passion in their marriage, but there is a sense of growing affection after the initial shyness. They are the most human of the characters because they are only pawns in a game, while those around them are politicking of their own accord. ...Found by an over eager Avon Lady after his inventor has snuffed it, Edward Scissorhands (Johnny Depp) is brought into pastel perfect idyllic suburbia to become the hairdresser/ topiarist of choice. Tim Burton’s personal fairytale crystallised many of his favourite themes - the outcast as hero, the weirdness that hides behind normality - and served up trademark arresting imagery but what was new here for Burton was the emotional timbre behind the bonkers visuals, a quality helped immeasurably by Depp’s poignant rendering of the bruised outsider.This magical film is a must for all Burton fans....
