This award winning film has several well known faces amongst the cast including Sandra Bullock and Matt Dillon. None of the roles are what I would call main characters. The film has several stories that run alongside each other and cross over through the film. This is something to consider before watching the film as it jumps from story to story in a pulp fiction style and can be confusing.
The Cast and their storylines -
It would take me all day to list the whole cast of the film and if I explained the storys in full I would give too much away. But here is a list of some of the more prominent cast and their character stories.
Sandra Bullock plays Jean Cabot the spoilt hard done to wife of politician Rick Cabot who is played by Brendan Fraser. They are held at gunpoint by two black teenagers who steal their car.
Matt Dillon is police officer John Ryan whos dad (Bruce Kirkby) is suffering from an illness which his son is struggling to get treatment for.
Terrence Howard and Thandie Newton play a movie guy and his wife who suffer a racial attack at the hands of Matt Dillon. There is also another story surrounding a film being made which links to these characters.
Other stories relate around a locksmith, a shop owner and other police officers one of whom is Det. Graham Waters played by Don Cheadle. His story starts at the beginning of the film with a car crash and he is linked to several of the other characters along the way.
The film is set in LA over 2 days and brings to light the racial prejudices and stereotypes that are common in modern life. Some of the scenes are shocking, particularly a scene about a young girl. I won't go into detail as I don't want to give it away. The stories are based around people from numerous different racial cultures and how they inter-relate in modern america. It made me realise just how much bigotry and ignorance there is in the world.
One of the themes of the film is good guy/bad guy? I found myself not liking a character one minute and then sympathising with them the next. Other characters it was the other way around.
I'm not sure if maybe this film went over my head, because I found myself saying at the end 'Oh is that it?' I like all the pieces to fit and all questions to be answered when I get to the end of a film. In my opinion this was made to make you think and keep thinking about it for days!
My favourite scene -
A girl is scared of the sound of gun shots so is hiding under her bed, her father gives her his invisible cloak for protection. Later in the film this pulls on the heartstrings a bit.
Overall view -
You can see why the film won awards. It is well written, fast paced and well acted. The stories are all interesting, believable and link well. The film requires concentration and is not something you can have on in the background. There are some dramatic, emotional, funny and shocking scenes. I personally would have liked more of a conclusion and less jumping from character to character, but other than that I did enjoy it.

Advantages: A realistic, raw and truly worthwhile film from director Paul Haggis. Disadvantages: Perhaps a few too many characters are brought in to play here.
