- COYOTE UGLY -
Coyote Ugly was released in the year 2000 and directed by David McNally and written by Gina Wendkos. Starring Piper Perabo and Adam Garcia. The Genre is Romantic Comedy/Drama. BBFC Rating: 12. Running Time: 100 mins. 'Coyote Ugly' is based upon the actual bar in New York City.-
Aspiring young songwriter Violet Sanford (Piper Perabo) decides to leave her father (John Goodman) and her home in a small town and head to the Big Apple where she will seek fame and fortune and have her finger on the pulse of all that is going on in the world of music. But the naive Violet is unpractised in the ways of the big city, and all efforts to get her demo tape fail, and she is left broke and destitute in the city she envisaged would become her oyster. Additionally, her run down apartment gets broken into and she is left penniless and in a quandary as to what to do next.
One night Violet bumps into Mr O'Donnell and a group of his friends whilst in a bar. He poses as a clubs booker and gets Violet to hand her demo tape over to him. She soon finds out that in actual fact Mr O'Donnell turns out to be none other than Kevin (Adam Garcia), the grill chef. Though off to a bad start these two soon become friends, and she tells him of her dreams to become a songwriter. He advises her
that the only way to get noticed in New York is for her to sing her songs on 'open mic' night. Violet explains that she suffers from crippling stage fright, something her mother also suffered from, and for her to get up on stage would take some doing. As chance would have it, Kevin just happens to know the manager of the club that holds open mic night, and he offers to take her there.
But money is low and just as she was thinking she would have to head home and face defeat, fate steps in, in the form of 'Coyote Ugly' a saloon bar in the centre of town. Bar owner, Lil (Mario Bello) is impressed with the young Violet. Coyote Ugly is a fun house; One of those bars where just about anything goes and the shy Violet isn't quite sure if this is for her or not, but nonetheless she decides to give it a go for the sake of her dream, and she arranges to start work there the next night.
When Violet arrives for work she is in for a bit of a shock as Coyote Ugly is a very wild bar, with a bad name and a bar where just about anything goes. There are regular bar room brawls, outrageous antics and beautiful, wild, crazy women and it has the infamous reputation as a bit of a hell hole. Basically Coyote Ugly is a bar where the barmaids call the shots. Using their feminine wiles they provoke the men and whip them up into a frenzy with their suggestive dancing and loud singing, till the guys can't wait to throw their dollar bills at them. The girls do very nicely for tips and the whole thing is done with tongue in cheek and a real nice friendly atmosphere.
As Violet walks through the door she is taken aback when she sees that there are girls gyrating on the bar with very little on, dragging the customers onto the bar and pouring beer down a mans shirt. There is a sea of men, stamping, whistling and howling for more. It's all a bit of a culture shock for the shy small town Violet and she sets to work behind the bar quietly, head down, while chaos reigns around her. Violet is determined to make a go of it as she needs the money and although being out of her depth, and despite the fact that she has the interference of the other well meaning barmaids and the awful bitch of the bar Rachel on her case, brilliantly played by Bridget Moynahan, she sets about to do just that.
One night all hell breaks loose and the whole club ends up in a massive brawl. Violet suddenly seems to change and come out of her shell. She decides she will calm the clientele down by performing and singing, and forgetting her stage fright, Violet, or 'Jersey' as she is now called by the rest of the barmaids, jumps up onto the bar and starts to perform. Could this be a turning point for the young Violet? And will she turn her dreams into reality in the Big Apple?-
What I like most about Coyote Ugly is that it is just a real fun film. Pure entertainment and not a bad plot line either. Originally based on an article on the actual club 'The Muse of the Coyote Ugly Saloon' written by Elizabeth Gilbert. The Coyote Ugly bar opened in 1993 and quickly became a favourite haunt to the Greenwich Village hipsters. A deliberate decision was made early on to use mainly unknown actors within the film to give it a 'rough edge' and I think it is this that gives the film its quirky quality. I like Piper Perado a lot in the part of Violet and she brings a lot of energy to her role. I thought all the young actors did really well and brought a vibrant and colourful element to the film.
The premise is a fun one and made for pure visual entertainment. The film features Johnny Knoxville (Jackass) LiAnn Rimes, Tyra Banks, and a sincere performance by John Goodman as Violets father. The music is brilliant throughout and really sets the mood and atmosphere of the film and features LeAnn Rimes as the singing voice of Violet. Music featured is by Def Leppard, EMF, INXS, Rare Blend, Tamara Walker, Don Henley, Snap, LeAnn Rimes, Mary Griffin, Blondie, The Calling, Billy Idol and so many more. There is a lot of action scenes within the Coyote Ugly club, as a lot of the films story is set there. The club atmosphere is really authentic with lots of singing and dancing which gives the film its 'fun feel' and sing a long factor.
'Coyote Ugly' refers to the act of a one night stand, then waking in the morning and finding out that the person beside you in the cold light of day is a 'big' mistake, and to get away you would happily gnaw a limb off to escape, without waking the person in question. - Coyotes will gnaw off a limb if they are caught in a trap so they can escape! -
Coyote Ugly is much more than just a romantic Comedy, or chick flick. It's a bit different; it's a quirky, raucous, fast moving, fun filled 100 minutes and I recommend it quite simply as purely a fun evening's entertainment. -
