"My name is Vincent and I am evil! Except on weekends when I go church. Oh yes on weekdays I am cruel, I like to blow people up and murder them slowly with my toxic arse fumes! I fear not death nor pain as I am dreaming a dream but I am still awake. It could be the Valium but who cares!"
He turns around and does his evil stupid laugh that all dumb bad guys usually do until a security guard chucks a grenade at him and bonks him on the head. Vincents picks up the grenade, pulls da the pin, then throws it back.
Don't get me wrong, that's not a spoiler but its generally what happens in the movie in a nutshell. The bad guy is this chap called Vincent who is a psychologically impaired individual. He was ok until he got sent to Titan (yes Titan the moon orbiting Saturn) in an Experiment. Well, obviously it went wrong and our man returns to civilisation a crazy dude with long wavy hair and nasty goaty beard trying to kill everybody all because he doesn't know if he is dreaming or if he is awake. Great huh?
So along comes the bounty hunters of the future riding on their junkpile of a spaceship, the Bebop. The crew consists of Spike Spiegel: our leading man with a blue suit, cropped trousers, afro-ish hair, good sharp shooter and martial
arts skills to rival Bruce Lee with a stick of butter. Jet Black: the owner of the Bebop who is balding, has a fake arm and was formerly a cop until he discovered corruption within his department. Faye Valentine: a woman from the past who was unfrozen from cryogenic stasis and lost her memory, is really vain and bitchy but can kick ass. Edward: A 13 year old genius hacker, Edward is really a girl and her dad probably named her when he was drunk. She has the amazing ability to make her body really floppy. And finally Ein: the intelligent dog. We also have Vincent's old flame who works for a drug company, but you'll have to watch the movie to see what her role in it is hehe!
The guys start hunting down our Vincent guy after a massive 300 million credit bounty was placed on his head. Oh yes, this is because Vincent unleashed a virus type thing that kills people upon air contact, and Vincent's ok since he has an immunity. Bollocky. Of course their chase leads to gun fights, evil groping and kung-fu battles between Vincent and Spike. Man does Vincent have a vice grip! Proper stab, grab, twist, blood, OW! How it ends you'll have to watch it and find out for yourself!
I was very entertained by this movie. The interactions between the characters really brought a smile to my face as they constantly nit pick, make fun of each other and contradict themselves. Spike's laid back attitude in the movie really got on my nerves at the beginning of the movie, but when the movie settles in and you see him kicking bad guy butt all over the dance floor that when you have to forgive him for his little gripes. Jet spends most of the movie talking, yap yap yap and not doing much except for the occasional 'HUH?' or 'GASP?'. If the movie didn't have him it wouldn't of made a difference to the story. Faye does her typical 'super bitch show off vain' stylee in this movie, and whilst she can get annoying as well (come on anybody would with this kind of woman), she plays a pivotal part of the plot after she helps reveal more about Vincent's secret immunity to the virus. Ein the dog and Edward (Ed) the genius have only a slightly more significant role than Jet, but the script could of easily have been adjusted to be watched without them at all (they arethe ones who lead Faye into finding Vincent).
You can tell a massive amount of time and effort was put into animating and bringing this movie to life. The illusion of movement is extremely realistic (especially during the intro, that was amazing how they animated that). True that as a Japanese animation some things were exaggerated, but overall they made the illusion of gravity, applied the laws of physics extremely well. The fluid motion also requires it to all be clear and sharp. This is important since it is going to be on DVD (I got the video tape but its a very high quality video tape) so if there are any discrepencies then you'll see it.
Now I've always wondered why they call it Cowboy Bebop. Well apparently the Cowboy part is another name given to bounty hunters. The word Bebop? Doesn't it have a sort of Jazz type sound to it? Well if you thought that then you're probably right, since this movie is dominated by Jazz type music. Well it's not that much of a bad thing since it does emphasise how laid back our main character Spike is. But come on, a movie with only 1 type of music becomes repetitive and after a while grates on your nerves. Luckily the music cuts off for the climatic fight at the end, and that's a good thing believe you me, unless you really love Jazz in which case I take that back.
All in all this movie really kicked batty. I liked it alot, and although the music did get on my nerves after a while, the way the story was played out and the character interaction saved it. I recommend this as a must see aniamtion movie even for those who do not like animation alot, this could change your opinion!
