.... There is an instant chemistry between them, Jai introduces Maya to Rasa Devi (played by Rekha), a former Courtesan who teaches the ways of the Kama Sutra in a school for courtesans. Maya joins the commune and learns about the text of the Kama Sutra.
This is all I am willing to give away about the plot. The rest of the film explores the complex relationships of the four main characters.

...‘Kama Sutra’ is a lavish, sensuous film, excellently directed by Mira Nair, who is noted for such other cinematic masterpieces as "Salaam Bombay" and "Mississippi Masala" and the more recent art house feature, "Monsoon Wedding". As are her other films, "Kama Sutra" is an intelligent and mesmerising story with excellent performances by a beautiful cast.
It is a tale of the friendship and rivalry between a princess and her servant girl set in 15th Century India [filmed entirely on location] and their application of lessons learned from the Kama Sutra in their complex relationships with men later on in life.

...Before she became famous for such films as 'Mississippi Masala' and 'Monsoon Wedding,' Mira Nair wrote and directed the dark and powerful 'Salaam Bombay!', the story of street children and prostitutes in the bustling city.
It is ironic that the film has an exclamation point in its title since it is quite a downer. However, it is full of interesting subtleties and is definitely worth seeing.
Young Krishna (How's that for a loaded name?) has been forced to leave home after setting fire to his brother's bicycle. His mother tells him that he can return home when he has earned 500 rupees, enough to pay for a new bike. Although his age is never given, Krishna seems much too young to be living on his own and says that he misses his mother when he goes to sleep.
