As a fan of the first 3 series, watched on TV, I really enjoyed the coupling expierience. Somehow, I managed to miss the fourth series and decided that I couldn't miss out on it altogther. I ordered it off Amazon a few months ago for around £7 which was a good price for a relatively new DVD.
The DVD contains 6 episodes. They are: "9 1/2 minutes", "Nighlines", "Bed time", "Circle of Edidurals", "The naked living room", "and " 9 1/2 months."
The episodes essentially centre around Susan (Sarah Alexander) and Steve (Jack Davenport), because of Susan's pregnency. Each character gives a good performance in their own unique style. Coupling has been likened to friends by many and I agree although I feel that it is a bit more fast-paced on the whole.
Steven Moffat was rumoured to be considering not making this fourth series but decided to push ahead with it anyway. It seems that he has lost that spark that made the other series so brilliant. Whereas in previous series, you were moving on from one side-splitting joke to another, this is not quite up to that level but still, the jokes and funny situations keep rolling in.
I must say that a couple of episodes are really very cleverly made and do produce the laughs I expected from the DVD. On the whole however this DVD is not quite up to the same high level as its predecessors.
In the defence of the series, the storyline is much better thought out than previous series and the acting by the characters is very good on the whole.
One episode that I really did enjoy was "The Naked Living Room." Excellent performances by Oliver (Richard Mylan) and Jane (Gina Bellman) really make this episode work. I found the situations Oliver found himself in really hilarious. This was the work from Steven Moffat that was expected throughout the series.
The extras on the DVD are fairly average. A script to screen document which gives an insight into the work invovled in making a programme. A set of outakes are also present which provide a few laughs.
Advantages: Who doesn't want to see more Coupling? Disadvantages: Geoff free and a program winding down.
Coupling has been billed as the British equivalent to Friends, but that by no means does the program justice. True, it's about 3 guys and 3 girls, and deals with their relationship successes and failures, butit's far funnier and more insightful than it's american cousin.
I feely admit that I loved the first 3 series of Coupling and was very excited about the fourth when it came out. I was disappointed to discover that the character Geoff, was pretty ... ...laughs even though not present) which made some of the surrealler comedy far more clumsy. Oliver, the replacement, is a good character, but I found him less likeable, and hence cared less.
The writing at times was at it's brilliant best. The very first episode "9 1/2 minutes", shows the same period from 3 different perspectives, and all intricately interwoven. It's this kind of storytelling that made the earlier couplings so popular. Similarly, ...

Advantages: Another funny season Disadvantages: Kinda clumsy with introducing the new character
...guys and 3 girls like Coupling does, you'd have to replace Jeff with another guy. That's just math. And after watching the series, try to watch the older ones again. Oliver doesn't act like Jeff at all if you are really watching. How they introduced him was a little clumsy (considering that the action that played Jeff just up and left), but i think it all worked out in the end. I quite like Oliver now. In short, give it a chance and have no expectations. ...
