consolidation of all those neuroses, small deceits, obsessions and personality tics that struck such a resonant chord when Steve, Susan and their four friends were first unleashed on us. Comparisons withFriendsitself are tiresome and lazy:Couplingis an intrinsically British comedy that picks apart the trivial and the mundane in everyday relationships and takes them on surreal journeys, leaving the participants hilariously bemused and rarely any wiser. Its success is due to the magical combination of Moffat's very funny scripts and the talents of six extremely likable actors, including Jack Davenport (Steve) and Sarah Alexander (Susan). But it's Richard Coyle's Jeff, whose sexual fantasies and putting-your-his-in-it propensities exert a compelling fascination, who really keeps you watching through your fingers as you hold your hands to your face in disbelief.Breasts, bottoms and pants are the basis for most of the conversational analysis when these friends get together as a group, as couples, as girlfriends or as mates, invariably becoming metaphors for the state of a relationship or situation. Individual viewpoints and terrors are explored through respective memories of the same event and what-if scenarios. Chain reactions inevitably ensue, fuelling comedy that is based almost entirely on misunderstanding. On the DVD:Coupling, Series 2on disc is presented in 16:9 anamorphic video aspect ratio, together with a crisp Dolby Digital stereo soundtrack; Mari Wilson's sensuous version of "Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps" for the theme tune deserves a special mention. Extras include disappointing interviews with writer Steven Moffat and Jack Davenport, which are mainly an excuse to repeat several major scenes from the series in full. The "Behind the scenes" feature is also a let-down: it's just a not very funny record of a cast photo shoot. --Piers Ford

Firstly we have Jeff. He's a funny welsh man basically. Although he is not set up as the main charactor, he should be. I have all four series, and in the last one Jeff isn't there, and they have tried to rpelace him, doesn't really work the same.
Steve and Susan are the main couple, and everyone is connected to these two in some way, i'll explain later. Steve is a guy in the relationship, under the thumb slightly, not too sure where the relationship is going. He wants to marry Susan, he just doesn't want to marry Susan. As he describes it "Its like death, you know its imminent, you just get scared when people start mentioning dates." Susan is for want of a better word, a nympho, and thats just how steve likes it. There alsways getting in to daft couple situations, finding his dirty vids, meeting the parents, etc.
Jeff is Steve's best friend and the guy who gets extremely nervous with women, he can't talk to them, he can't even look at them without braking in to a sweat. He gets himself in some amazingly ridicolous postions. No matter how ridicolous these situations are, you can fully sympathise with him, and understand how he's actualy ended up there.
Sally is Suan's best friend. A 30 year old who's trying to beat human nature by not ageing, with an amazing amount of mosturiser. Sally is not very self confident, and always worries about the way she looks, if she's looking older, and worrying about her skin. She owns a beauty shop. She also has an on off thing with Patrick. Sally is a very god side story within the show.
Patrick, this is Susan's ex. The guy in the group, he loves his women, and is very well renowned for his massive private parts. He doesn't od dating really, doesn't like to be tied down, very funny guy. Slightly dim, but still a loveable guy. He has a slight thing with Sally, which runs throughtout the series.
Jane is Steve's ex. I must admit from a personal point of view, she is the most annoying and bugs the hell out of me. She's very "me me me" and think she's god's gift. She's not very intelligent, but as a different twist compared to everyone else she fits in well. Always bugging steve, like the annoying ex.
All in all thse characters play off each other so well. If you want a good laugh and somehting different from the norm this is the comedy for you. It's a shame only four series were made. Unfortunatley due to lack of plublicity and the BBC showing it on BB2, it never really got the credit it deserves. I can't fault it in anyway, its brillian't, comic genuise.
Advantages: Entertaining, varied, great acting, good mix of tones Disadvantages: Bit slow starting
Whalley-Kilmer, Patricia Hayes, Bernard Gallagher, Kevin Whately, Geoffrey Hutchings, Shirley Stelfox, George Irving and Sherrie Hewson. I always enjoy spotting these famous faces from almost thirty years ago and trying to work out what else we?ve seen them in!
Both my husband and I really enjoyed watching the series and have already ordered Series2 on DVD. It did seem rather slow at first though and took us a couple of episodes to really get into. Compared to today?s fast-paced television, Juliet Bravo seemed almost to be in slow motion at times! But once you get used to this, you appreciate the longer scenes as they give the actors more chance to play the part well, especially when compared to today?s TV, when the scenes whiz by at a dizzying pace sometimes!
Some of the storylines are quite ambitious for 1980 and out of the sixteen ...
Advantages: Funny, heart-warming, Julie Walters is hilarious Disadvantages: Takes a while to warm up, no extras
ten years old), it doesn't seem to be re-run very regularly. If it were, I would be less likely to want to buy the DVD. However, as it is, I am more than willing to add it to my collection. And I'm looking forward to seeing the next (and final) series, which has a few more episodes - hooray. I recommend this DVD to anyone who likes well-written British sitcoms - it perhaps isn't as well-known as it should be, but it is definitely worth a watch - just remember it takes a couple of episodes to grow on you. Recommended.
The DVD is available from play.com for £6.99, although it is probably worth looking at the series 1 and 2 boxset, currrently available for £8.99.

DVD Description
COUPLING, a kind of British equivalent on FRIENDS, really formed its own identity in its second series. All nine episodes are included here, the highlight being "The Man with Two Legs" in which Jeff (Richard Coyle) has to explain to a girl he likes that he lied about having a wooden leg.
