Advantages: A few well-played parts, visually impressive. Disadvantages: Script and plot are weak, characters too stereotypical.
If you did like The Man in the Iron Mask, you'll like The Count of MonteCristo because it is along similar lines. Fans of swashbuckling action should also rejoice - there's a fair bit of that. My wife claims to have enjoyed it greatly - but her judgement tends to rely exclusively on how good looking the star is (Caviezel scored nine out of ten, in case you were interested!). If you do decide that you want to see The Count of MonteCristo , you would be best to find a cinema that is re-showing it (my cinema re-runs older movies on Saturday mornings) instead of watching it on DVD or VHS - you won't appreciate the sheer scale of the locations otherwise.

Remade 10 times (3 times for TV), you have to start wondering whether or not Hollywood have any original ideas left. Fortunately, this is not an ill-fated attempt at polishing a turd ? it?s a surprisingly engaging old-fashioned yarn. I can?t say I?ve seen any of the other attempts to bring Alexandre Dumas? classic novel to the screen, but this suitably impressed me.
***ACTING UP***
Jim Caviezel is one of those actors whose face you?ll know, but probably won?t remember for doing a superb acting ...
Advantages: Good action, looks great, fantastic story Disadvantages: Average script and acting, misses lots out from the book
is now married to his enemy and they are living in Paris. So he goes off and tracks them down, and with his new-found wealth, he can finally get his vengeance on all those that betrayed him, under the pretence of the Count of MonteCristo?
As I said, I do like this genre of film anyway, so I was always going to enjoy this. It has everything an adventure film should have: a gripping storyline, a dastardly villain (but not over the top), some great swashbuckling action, stunning locations and costumes, and even buried treasure. The acting from the two leads is fine, if not ground-breaking, with Guy Pearce being cast perfectly as the baddie due to his evil grin. There are also appearances from the late Richard Harris as Faria, and possibly someone off Taggart playing Napoleon Bonaparte; see if you recognise him! The woman who plays ...
