writer-director James Mangold took on this gritty crime drama, which was highly touted as Sylvester Stallone's long-awaited return to a serious dramatic role. With an illustrious cast of co-stars, includingGoodFellasalumni Robert De Niro, Harvey Keitel, and Ray Liotta, Stallone plays Freddy Heflin, the ineffectual sheriff of a New Jersey suburb that a group of corrupt New York cops have turned into their own off-duty criminal empire. Deaf in one ear and desperate to prove his worth, the sheriff takes on the cops with standoffish assistance from an Internal Affairs cop (De Niro), resulting in an explosive climactic showdown. The stellar cast can't be beat, and Stallone is quite good as the overweight cop whose pride is on the line. Mangold's script is wildly uneven, butCop Landstill packs a white-knuckled punch.--Jeff Shannon

Not really a suprise I suppose when you look at the quality of the cast. Slyvester Stallone proves that he can act (so keen was he to do the film he gained 40 pounds, and only got basic union rates) He is the central character of the film, Freddy, a slow but good hearted sheriff who presides over a corrupt small town of mainly NYPD cops, just over the river from, and out of the reach of officialdom fron New York. Ray (the always excellent Harvey Kietel) the leader of the corrupt cops, has been taking mob backhanders, and has resorted to the murder of fellow cops to keep his empire intact. When Moe Tilden (Deniro) an internal affairs investigator comes sniffing around. It is clear that loyalities and friendships will be pushed to the limit. The film mainly revolves around the relationships, rivalries and scores to settle between the various characters. Stallone is good as a character who is forced to wake up to the realities he has been hiding from, and use the intelligence that you feel he has been hiding from, because he doesn't want to know the truth. You get the impression that Deniro isn't really trying, but he still portrays a strong character. Ray Liotta is a good as we know he can be with a good script (see Goodfellas) with the part of a corrupt cokehead cop, Gary Figgis (Figgsy) who starts to have second thoughts who confronted with the scale of the corruption. Freddy and Figgsy join forces to try and bring down Ray even though Internal Affairs have been ordered to drop the case. To sumarise a thoughful thriller which if you like character driven narratives is well worth a look.
Advantages: Great cast, brilliant performances, gripping plot Disadvantages: Not enough action?
I just had to write a review of this film because I felt the other ones I read do not do it justice.
The story goes like this: Sylvester Stallone is a wannabe cop, Freddy, who has instead been given the job of sheriff in the town of Garrison near New York, a "safe haven" for disillusioned NYPD officers, situated across the river from the city itself. The town's population is made up entirely of officers and their families. Freddy himself was kept ... ...as a result of saving a girl from drowning while a teenager. To add insult to injury, the girl, who Freddy is in love with, ends up marrying an NYPD officer. Ouch.
Ray (Harvey Keitel), the corrupt cop behind the setting up of Garrison, employs Freddy as he sees him as incapable of anything more than turning a blind eye to the shady shenanigans behind the scenes, the latest of which involves the staged death of another officer. However, when an internal ...

Advantages: good to see Stallone in a different guise Disadvantages: none really, a good story
It was an interesting change to see Mr stallone in a different guise. what's so different about him being in a uniform you ask?
In this he plays an overweight, slightly deaf, bumbling smalltown law enforcement officer. He is basically being taken for a ride by New York cops who use his small town as a hideout from NYC.
They are all corrupt and he is expected to turn a blind eye to it all going on. Although I think harvey Keitel is in perhaps too ... ...is of course one of the corrupt policemen and as with the others is initially benevolent if condescending to Stallone's character.
Eventually Stallone ends up taking these guys on when the effects of the corruption become too much (murder etc.) At first they deafen him completely by firing a shot at point blank next to his good ear. This leads to an interesting climax. when the final (inevitable) shoootout takes place he has to use his other senses ...

This is a great movie about a bunch of corrupt cops who work for the city of New York, but live in a small town across the river where they do their business. They hand-picked the sheriff an overweight half-deaf man, played by Sylvester Stallone, who desperately wants to become one of them, but because of his hearing he can't. Robert DeNiro plays an internal affairs officer who decides to investigate the cops and try to get help from Stallone. Now ... ...life and expose them, or to stay silent about his heroes, and maybe get a job as one of them. This is a very well written movie, Ray Liotta is excellent as a Scuzzy, corrupt cop who is having second thoughts about his life. Harvey Keitel does a good job playing the leader of the corrupt cops. DeNiro's role is small, but he plays it well. Michael Rapapport and Robert Patrick offer strong support as fellow cops. ...

Sylvester Stallone is in superb form playing the role of the local sheriff in "Copland." Cop Land is an area across the bridge from New York, where a large proportion of the local residents are New York cops. Stallone's character has always wanted to be a New York Cop but couldn't get in due to a damaged ear which he got as a young boy saving a girl from drowning. So he has had to settle for being the local sheriff where the cops living there are ... ...type of movie that would probably appeal only to certain people it's a slow paced thriller, but very enjoyable. It also features a star studded cast including Harvey Keitel, Robert Deniro, Ray Liotta as well as many others. Stallone did such a great job he proves that he is more than just an action star. It's hard to say much more without giving the plot away, so just rent it and have a great few hours in front of the box. ...

A cop is in charge of a town where the corrupt members of the NYPD live. He is pushed the breaking point and tries to save his town from the corruption.
Well let me tell you what, I never saw so many overweight actors in my life. Not only did Stallone gain 40 pounds for the part but I think everyone else did also. This movie was just OK. I did not like Stallone's character because he played some wimp. This is not the action hero I grew up with. ...

Advantages: Grade A acting, police corruption, great plot Disadvantages: None
Copland is a fantastic film, I watched it when I rented it from my local library and I was absolutly hooked. It is the American version of Infernal Affairs, not only because police corruption is the fundamental aspect of the films but also in the spell-binding perforamcne given by an all-star cast, to excellent effect.
The film see Sylvester Stallone, in a far cry from his (stereo)typical roles as an all out action hero, instead plays a deaf, overweight, bumbling idiot of a sherriff of a small suburbian town called Garrison, which is also known locally as Copland, as so many cops from New York live there. He is effectively manipulated and used by a group of corrupt New York cops, including Ray Liotta and Harvey Keitel.
A rather interesting aspect of this film is the agonising dilemma Stallone finds himself in, torn betwen to his ...

DVD Description
In the idyllic bedroom community of Garrison, New Jersey, a community of NYPD officers takes refuge away from the big city's troubles while still enjoying all the kickbacks, cover-ups, and mob-owned banking privileges from across the river. But the code of silence is tested when an off-duty, drunk rookie cop from their ranks wrongfully kills two black men and the local sheriff begins to investigate. COP LAND is an ambitious ensemble drama notable for eliciting a strong performance (and a 40-lb weight gain) from Sylvester Stallone.
