Cool Runnings (1993) "Want to kiss my lucky egg?", "You can pee now!" and "Yeah man!" are just a few of the amazing quotes in this great action packed film. 4 jamaicans and their coach (John Candy) decide to embark on a bobsledding adventure in calgary for the winter olympics of 1988!
The start of the movie see's Sanka Coffie retain his title as push car champion on the small island. Another 3 Jamaicans are competing for the chance to go to the olymics to represent Jamaica as 100m sprinters. Unfortunately for them Junior Bevil trips over, taking Yul Brenner and Derice Bannock with him. This is a very tradgic end to these Jamicans dreams of permorfing in the olympics.....................
Or is it?
Derice Bannock, son of gold medalist Ben Bannock decides to form a Bobsled team with his pal, Sanka Coffie, the olmpian that was tripped with him, Yul Brenner and the guy that tripped them, Junior Bevil.
To start with the Jamicans are the laughing stock of not only their own country but also the rest of the world! However
the Jamaicans never give up and manage to scrape through their trail to qualify for the winter Olympics.
With many twists and turns in the movie can the Jamaicans go all the way? i will leave that to you to find out but its one hell of a ride! CAST AND CHARACTERS
[edit] Cast and Characters John Candy - Irving 'Irv' Blitzer Leon Robinson - Derice Bannock Doug E. Doug - Sanka Coffie Malik Yoba - Yul Brenner Rawle D. Lewis - Junior Bevil Kristoffer Cooper - Winston Peter Outerbridge - Josef Grool Winston Stona - Mr. Coolidge Charles Hyatt - Whitby Bevil (Junior's Father) Bertina Macauley - Joy Bannock Pauline Stone Myrie - Sanka's Mother WHY DID THEY MAKE THIS FILM?
Characters The bobsledders portrayed in the film are fictional, although the people who conceived the idea of a Jamaican bobsled team were inspired by pushcart racers and tried to recruit top track sprinters. However, they did not find any elite sprinters interested in competing, and ended up having to recruit four sprinters from the Army for the team. Irving Blitzer is a fictional character; the real team had several trainers, none of whom were connected to any cheating scandal. At the time of the movie's release, the United States had not won a gold medal in Bobsleigh at the Winter Olympics since the four-man event in 1948. The double gold medalist in bobsleigh at the 1968 Winter Olympics was Italy's Eugenio Monti.
Consistently funny and entertaining, Cool Runnings is a pefect example of a well-done feel-good live-action Disney film. Video - As one of Disney's very first DVD releases, Cool Runnings is presented in non-anamorphic widescreen. While the DVD undoubtedly would have benefitted from 16:9 enhancement, video quality looks fairly solid, nonetheless. There is a colorful pallette on display in this film, from the beautiful vibrant Jamaican scenery to the almost-tangible icy cold blues of Calgary. There are some minor print flaws from time-to-time but these certainly do not detract from one's enjoyment of the movie. Overall, a pleasant video transfer that is not flawless, but is a fairly pleasing effort. It's worth noting that the movie is framed at a ratio of about 1.75:1, as opposed to the 1.85:1 that it most commonly was projected at in theaters. However, framing seems perfect, so the minimal loss or gain of information (provided that that is the explanation) is not an issue.
Audio - A little bit disapointing is the lack of a Dolby Digital 5.1 track. We do get a Dolby Surround track, which does make what it can of its limited speaker setup. The lively soundtrack of Jamaican rhythms comes through fine, although a 5.1 track would allow for a wider and more soundfield. There is limited surround usage, particularly in the actual bobsled runs. While 5.1 would certainly beneficial, for Dolby Surround, the track is okay. Extras - Just the theatrical trailer in fullscreen and 2.0 audio. An entertaining trailer indeed, but a commentary or featurette would have been nice additions as well. You do get a sense that supplemental materials exist from the DVD release of The Kid in which director Jon Turtletaub talks about working with John Candy and we see some footage from the set. More extras would have certainly been welcome, especially if they had the materials.
Cool Runnings is a thoroughly enjoyable feel-good comedy. The film could use a better DVD, but if you're looking to own the movie, this disc is the best you can expect. The video quality blows VHS out of the water, and this is one of the DVDs where you decide to purchase based on the film quality, more so than the rather barebones DVD. On the film quality alone, I'd heartily recommend this one. I bought my copy for £3 so i know that it is available from that price upwards!
Hope you enjoy COOL RUNNINGS!
