Cool Runnings is a great light hearted comedy for the whole family. It follows the story of four Jamaican guys who are unhappy with their lives and the jobs they have on the island. One of them a failed sprinter persuades the other three that they should combine together and form Jamaica's first bobsled team, even though there is no snow in Jamaica and certainly no ice for them to practice on. John Candy who plays their coach in the film persuades them that they can succeed and make it to the Calgary winter Olympics.
Practice consists of sliding down a hill a make shift bobsled made from wood. There are many accidents along the way and when the team are introduced to ice things turn from bad to worse. They can't even walk on it let alone run! Finally they begin to improve and after months of practice make the qualifying time for the games. They can't believe it!!
Once they arrive at the games they have to get themselves a decent bobsled. Their coach used to be associated with the US team and subsequently manages to get the Jamaicans a US training sled - it's very rickety but does the job. They paint it up in the national colours - yellow, green and black and are ready to go! After the first day of competition they are reasonably placed and things are looking good for the guys, however on the second day things take a turn for the worse. The team manage to flip the bobsled towards the end of the run - they all climb out and lift the bobsled up onto their shoulders and walk it across the finish line to a standing ovation! Great stuff!
A team who were mocked and ridiculed going into the competition for their lack of experience end the tournament on a high and with pride in the hearts at what they have achieved. After this the team are so ecstatic that they decide to return to the next games in four years time to see if they can better their achievements.
Cool Runnings really is a great film, although now quite dated I would definitely recommend it.
