In my opinion, this is the greatest Disney film of all time! A true story which sounds so implausible in itself that it makes you laugh to think of it. “Who would have thought, a Jamaican Bobsled team?”
The film features a cast of virtually unknown black actors and is initially set on the tropical island before moving to the freezing temperatures of Calgary. The story centres around Derice Bannock (Leon), a 100metre sprinter who is unfortunately tripped up at the Olympic Trials by Junior (Lewis). But Derice won’t give up on his Olympic dream as his father was an Olympic Gold medallist.
Whilst in the Jamaican Olympics Office, he sees a picture of his father along with American Irv Britzer (Candy), a bobsled coach. It was his idea to use sprinters to push the bobsleds, and with this, Derice sees his chance to get to the Olympics. Along with best friend Sanka (Doug), they persuade Irv to coach them, and this is where the adventure begins.
This film really should be worthy of “classic” status because the antics of the team are so hilariously funny. as well as the comical moments, the film teaches youngsters lessons, in the fact that you should be who you want to be, and never give up on your dreams.
This is a great family film. The only downside to the film is that it was the last movie to be completed by John Candy, who unfortunately died in the middle of filming “Wagons East”. He was a great comedy actor and is sadly missed.

It was a very entertaining film, no question - and John Candy was a sad loss, dying well before his time. Good op, and I look forward to reading more. Bruce (bwsr2)
