I was about the age of 9 when this film came out in the cinema. I asked one of my friends to come with me to see it and she said yes, and I'm glad she did! If she hadn't have gone with me on that particular night I may never have seen this fantastic movie!
John Candy, who is possibly one of the funniest men to act around this period in movie making, stars in this movie alongside Leon, Doug E. Doug, Rawle D. Lewis and Malik Yoba. Derice is played by Leon and is pretty much the main character, He is one of the fastest sprinters in Jamaica and is just about posative he will win the sprint and qualify for the Olympics. He has been training for months and is sure he has it in the bag until a problem arises, Junior! Junior is played by Rawle D. Lewis and is the little "rich boy" of the team, he has never wanted for anything in his life but feels the need to prove to his father that he can do something on his own, namely getting into the olympics. In the trial he slips and falls, costing him and Derice the race. Derice isn't the only one he trips though, meet Ule Brennar, a discuntled Jamaican that will do just about anything to get off the Island. He is also cost an olympic place that he is sure he could have taken.
Derice is determined not to miss out on the chance of going to the olympics and finds out what events are left. Bobsleding is the only event left. This is where John Candy comes into play, He is Erv, former gold meddalist now washed up bum that hangs out in a bar betting his money away on horse races. Derice attempts to persuade him to coach teh team with a little help from his friend Sanka. The fastest Push cart driver in all Jamaica, Sanka is the clown of the bunch and is always coming out with witty little comments or producing funny moments. Put these five people together and you have a fast but hopeless bobsled team and a washed up coach.
The team face many problems but seem to overcome them in a heart warming tale of team spirit and survival. It has some great comedy moments to add to that but I think the big success is the fact that it is based on the true life story of the Jamaican bobsled team. It shows how race affected every aspect of life.
This is a great film, I don't think there will be many people out there that hasn't seen this film, but if you haven't, go see it now!!!!
