This is a light-hearted comedy which will never be forgotten. I can watch this film over and over again and never get tired of it. I’ve seen Cool Runnings so many times on tele. I’ve always wanted to get it on video and when I tried to record it, I accidentally recorded the wrong channel and ended up with half of Clueless and a nature programme! I wasn’t impressed, but luckily it was on tele yesterday so I managed to record it then. Cool Runnings is a true story about the first Jamaican Bobsled Team. This is unbearably funny, you get constant stomach pains from laughing at the nutty characters. It’s also quite moving towards the end, its all about their dreams coming true and them working so hard to achieve those dreams.
It all starts with the Olympic trials for the 100 metres. It’s Derese’s dream to become and Olympic athlete just like his father. He had been training for months for the trials and knew that he would get through, there was no doubt about it. But during the race, Junior, another hopeful tripped up and brought Derese and Brenner with him. In a matter of seconds all three of there dreams were shattered into a million pieces. So, they had lost their chances of being Olympians and there was nothing they could do about it. As Derese’s father was a gold medallist for the !00 metres, Derese desperately wanted to follow him. He attempted to create the first Jamaican Bobsled Team. Everyone laughed at him, even Sanka, his best friend. In the end he made up the team which included himself, Sanka, Junior (who tripped him in the first pace), and Brenner. Their Coach (John Candy) wasn’t impressed with the team but he was prepared to help them. After all, the Jamaicans’ had never even seen a Bobsled before let alone been able to ride one at Olympic standard!!!!
They raised money to go to Canada- Junior sold his car and used the money to get them to Canada. Just picture this, 4 Jamaicans who’ve never set foot off their tiny tropical island have just arrived in a freezing cold country with constant blizzards. It was so funny when they stepped outside, it took them ages to adjust to the cold. When they got to the trials everyone was staring and laughing at them and nobody seemed to like them. They still tried their best but when they had their first ever trial they humiliated themselves. They couldn’t control the sled and their heads were bobbing everywhere! They were in a strange country, with the whole world against them apart from Jamaica. You would’ve thought they’d give up, but no. Sanka came up with a chant, and it put them in the spirit and state of mind for success. On the second trial they were amazing! They got themselves from last place to 8th place! After this incredible boost of success, the whole world went Jamaica crazy and everyone was willing them to win. On the third and final trial they were doing incredibly well, they were as fast as they had ever been and were flying round the course. But (there’s always a but), their sled had some trouble and the started flying out of control. The sled couldn’t be stopped and it turned on its’ side. It gradually stopped and the crowed were silent. Derese just had to cross the finish line, so they picked up the sled and carried it do the finish line. Gradually the crowd began to clap and soon everyone was cheering for them. They may not have won, but they fulfilled their dreams, and four years later they returned to the Olympics with respect and as equals.
This is a must see film! It’s wicked!

I remember watching this at the cinema when I was about 14 and thought that this was the best film ever! Obviously it wasn't (there have been many more better ones made) but I watched it again not that long ago and really enjoyed it - I had forgotten just how funny it was :-)
