Cool Runnings is a Disney film based on a true story which many people including myself can watch over and over again throughout its life on the video shelf. The story is about 4 Jamicans and their coach and there amazing progress and determination to get themselves into the Winter Sports Olympics for the first time ever in 1988 in Calgary, Canada.
The reason I'm only just writing an opinion on this brilliant but pretty old film is that it was shown on normal TV today. As I sat down in front of the telly I noticed a film that I haden't seen for years, I knew I recognised it from somewhere then realised that it was 'Cool Runnings'. Of course I sat down and had a brilliant fulfilled afternoon of entertainment.
Many people have commented on my film reviewing lately and how I give away the story too much! So for all you people out there who haven't seen this film yet, I'll only give out the details and the story in small detail! Hope I've improved!
An ex American bobslay runner, Irv Blitzer whose played by John Candy (Home Alone films) has the brilliant idea/brainwave/theory that fast runners would make a superb bobslay team. After you watch the olympic sprint finalists fail one young hopeful convinces Irv Blitzer to be his coach and make a successful bob slay team. His name is Derise Banner, another 2 guys join the team which leaves the team 1 person short. Sure enough another person joins, his a Jamaican push-cart champion named Sanka Coffey who is played by Doug E Doug, the once famous rap singer.
The team now complete, narrowly gets into the Winter Sports Olympics only to find themselves the joke of the whole competition. Just because they are Jamaican and have never had an entry in the Olympics before, people reckon they'll do absolute rubbish! People don't even give them a chance!
There first day is a dissapointment to the team, they don't do too well though they have been taught never to give up hope and on the second day they have an absolutely brilliant run and recieve an excellent time. They're now moving from last position upwards, to recieve a medal they need to have a superb run for their third race. There determination gives them a good start but towards the end of the race, the teams bob slay falls apart and ruins all chance of success. Everyone is ok, just shaken and to show there determination they carry their bob slay to and over the finishing line together and slowly start to recieve an around of appaluse.
I hope that was short and sweet enough for you all out there, the film is a great comedy, VERY funny but also serious with a brilliant point put across. The soundracks to the film were all superb so my parents say although there all quite old now! this film is very pleasant and enjoyable for the whole family to sit down and watch, its a brilliant true story and quite sad as well. It just shows that we should all admire and be proud of each others courage, in this case the Jamaicans especially. Well done to Disney too for an enjoyable afternoon!
