a beautiful, rebel screen icon playing the stubbornly tough and independent title character in Cool Hand Luke. And before he became familiar as a sidekick in 1970s' disaster movies (Earthquake and the Airport movies), George Kennedy won an Oscar for playing Dragline, the brutal chain-gang boss who tries to beat loner Luke's cool out of him. It's a classic rebel-against-the-repressive-institution story in the line of One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest or The Shawshank Redemption. Certain moments have become classics--particularly the hardboiled egg-eating contest and the immortal line (drooled by Strother Martin, as a sadistic redneck prison officer): "What we have here is a failure to communicate". And don't forget, Luke is also the source of the oft-quoted driving ditty: "I don't care if it rains or freezes, long as I have my plastic Jesus, right here on the dashboard of my car." --Jim Emerson

DVD Description
In this classic Southern prison drama, social misfit Lucas Luke Jackson (Paul Newman) is incarcerated for a petty crime and sentenced to a chain gang. Luke is a sullen and laconic young man whose cool defiance of the sadistic warden and bullying inmates earns him the title Cool Hand Luke. But as the prisoners' respect for Luke grows into hero worship, he finds that he must risk everything in order to live up to their expectations. Filled with dozens of memorable scenes (Luke eating 50 eggs) and quotable lines (What we have here is a failure to communicate), COOL HAND LUKE is a testament to excellent screenwriting (Donn Pearce and Frank Pierson) and Newman's charm and skill as an actor. The film also features an outstanding supporting cast that includes George Kennedy, Strother Martin, and early screen appearances by Dennis Hopper and Harry Dean Stanton.

Advantages: you want to see it again Disadvantages: i can say none
...i recall the first time i seen the film coolhandluke, the scene were luke eats the 50 eggs and just makes it,his will to beat the system makes any one who is going through there teens compare themselves to the character of luke.i really liked the scene were he was recaptured and shown the magazine with the false picture of him with 2 girls and he tells his inmates to stop sucking on his life.when i first seen the film i was 17 and didnt see it again until i was about 34 and just seen it again about a month ago now in my early forties.its still a classic jail movie and vintage newman.it has to be his best movie and is funny and sad and just brilliant with good supporting role by kennedy.if you havent seen it go hire it....

Advantages: Newman, them eggs Disadvantages: None that I can think of
...CoolHandLuke is Paul Newman's finest hour as the prisoner who refuses to be crushed by the vicious regime of the big boss - it's a wonderful film and Newman is outstanding.
His bet that he can eat a load of hard boiled eggs and his subsequent blown out belly is one of the most memorable sequences ever in film for some unknown reason.
I'm pretty hazy on the finer detail of this story, having not seen it for years, but all I can say is that I remember well how very wonderful I thought it was.
The brutality of the prison guards was truly shocking at the time and it's a steamy and passionate tale of bucking against the oppressive system...

Advantages: Excellent Disadvantages: Maybe not what you're expecting
...Considered to be one of the highpoints on Paul Newman's CV, this has gained the reputation of being something special, but just how many takes on the prison drama can we take?
Sent to a minimum securoty prison for damaging parking meters, war veteran Luke finds himself a man alone amongst a gang of hardened criminals. Can he gain their respect (and maybe his freedom at the same time)? Showing a spirit never seen before, Luke earns the respect of the guards and prisoners alike, but is respect all that he wants?
The prison drama has been visited many times and with varying degrees of success. We've gone from local sheriff's jails to maximum security prisons and seen just about every aspect of prison life, so what can CoolHandLuke bring that's new? Actually it can bring quite a lot as this is a surprisingly different film. Ok so...
