When he gets into the prison he realises a couple of things. 1. He hates authority. 2. He has a knack of escaping. Unfortunately these things put together with his unfortunate habit of getting caught again make for a bad time of it for poor old ... ...we will ever be able to achieve this level again. The movie is also visually fantastic and the writing faultless. Advantages: Excellent Disadvantages: Maybe not what you're expecting
...prison life, so what can Cool Hand Luke bring that's new? Actually it can bring quite a lot as this is a surprisingly different film. Ok so the prisoner's point of view is not new but this film takes this to a new level as we investigate the human spirit far more closely, and it all makes for compelling viewing. While it might have been easy for the makers to fill the screen with 60's icons and imagery, this does stand up as being a pretty timeless ... ...system in Escape From Alcatraz, Cool Hand Luke shows us the human side of the system and it's a view than well worth watching.
Naturally violent and horrific at times, this is obviously not going to be for all tastes, but it will appeal to a surprisingly wide audience and I for one was very impressed ...

Advantages: Cool Movie some classic lines,Newman's steel blue eyes and a story line that ticks along fine Disadvantages: Don't get caught destroying parking meters or you may get a slapped wrist these days
...Movie has Newman as loner COOL HAND LUKE,put into a chain gang for destroying parking meters whilst drunk.
Kennedy won the Best supporting actor Oscar, as the mean convict boss hell bent on breaking Newman.
The notable and most copied part of the film is the egg eating contest. The sight of Newman waddling like a duck is Hilarious.
LUKE becomes a hero to his boulder bashing inmates, which turns toward tragedy.Newman emerges as a victim more to ... ...think the worm has turned, there's a twist in the tail.
The ending being the highlight you'll remember the film for.
Jack Lemmon's company produced this for Warner Bros. shot in California, but set in the south.

Advantages: Very cool film, score, cast, advert for poultry produce Disadvantages: just a bit dated
This is a true classic, where to start? I have seen this film so many time but would happily watch it again. Luke, played by Paul Newman is on a slippery slope and he ends up being sent to prison, there is not much before he is sent as the film is based around the prison time. He starts off just like any other guy serving his time, but he is not going to be pushed around like any other guy. When the head inmate starts to give him a hard time he does ... ...fight in the yard where luke gets battered but he rufuses to stay down, he just keeps coming back to the point where even the guy he is fighting just cant carry on. Again and again he gets up till eventually Luke gains the respect of the other inmates due to the fact he wont give up on anything.
This becomes the theme for luke, his never say die attitude, they are so bored they challenge him to eat 50 boiled eggs, he makes them tar a road in record ...

Advantages: Newman, them eggs Disadvantages: None that I can think of
Cool Hand Luke is Paul Newman's finest hour as the prisoner who refuses to be crushed by the vicious regime of the big boss - it's a wonderful film and Newman is outstanding.
His bet that he can eat a load of hard boiled eggs and his subsequent blown out belly is one of the most memorable sequences ever in film for some unknown reason.
I'm pretty hazy on the finer detail of this story, having not seen it for years, but all I can say is that I remember ...

Filled with dozens of memorable scenes (Luke eating 50 eggs) and quotable lines (What we have here is a failure to communicate), COOL HAND LUKE is a testament to excellent screenwriting (Donn Pearce and Frank Pierson) and Newman's charm and skill as an actor. The film also features an outstanding supporting cast that includes George Kennedy, Strother Martin, and early screen appearances by Dennis Hopper and Harry Dean Stanton.

Review: This is a fantastic ensemble piece led by a career-high performance from Newman and stylish direction from Rosenberg... 5 out of 5 stars (Total Film, )
Paul Newman had one of his best roles... Much of the fun today comes from eyeing minor players. Newman's fellow rock-splitters include Dennis Hopper and Richard Davalos... (USA Today, )
