CB radio-themed novelty hit was just a collection of trucker slang, but here it is gussied up by Sam Peckinpah (no less) as a big rig reprise ofThe Wild Bunchwith Kris Kristofferson as trucker outlaw hero Rubber Duck and a wonderfully oversized Ernest Borgnine as "Dirty Lyle", the "bear" who hates "breakers" and finally decides to call in the National Guard to help him enforce traffic laws with machine guns. The plot is almost invisible, as Rubber Duck and his breaker buddies just up and decide to trundle their lorries across the Western States in a dash for Mexico (no one ever mentions delivering their loads to intended destinations) and becoming such a folk hero that the creepy governor (Seymour Cassell) tries to cash in. Kristofferson and Borgnine were old Peckinpah hands, as is heroine Ali MacGraw (a characterless photographer) and sidekick Burt Young ("Love Machine" aka "Pigpen"), and there's a lot of business about cops and outlaws who mirror each other, but the main attraction is the visuals--huge trucks rolling across desert roads in clouds of dust, police cars crashing through billboards, trucks demolishing a corrupt small town. There are traces of road-movie melancholia in the depressed cafes, jails and laybys where free spirits are broken, but it's still mostly a cash-in on Smokey and the Bandit with a few rags of poetry tossed into the mix.On the DVD:A letterboxed print, enhanced for 16x9, looks pretty good, with enough widescreen to get all the trucks into the image. But otherwise this is the sort of release that passes off "chapter search" and "multilingual menus" as extras, although there are basic filmographies for the principal and a poster/photo album. The mono soundtrack comes in English, French, Spanish and Italian. --Kim Newman

This movie was released in 1978 with the intentions of being as popular as as an earlier country and western type film called 'Smokey and the bandit' but falling slightly short of its goal. Convoy, however, did more for the Citizen Band radio than any advertisement could ever achieve.
**BRIEF PLOT**
When trucker Martin Penwald, {C.B. name rubber duck}, (played by Kris Kristofferson) crosses the path of local Sherriff Lyle Wallace, {Cottonmouth}, (played by Ernest Borgnine) rubber ducks life takes a turn for the worst.
After a brief altercation at a truck-stop involving Cottonmouth, rubber duck and other truckers and C.B. enthusiast, including Pig pen, (played by Burt Young), Widow Woman, (played by Madge Sinclair) and Spider Mike, (played by Franklyn Ajaye) the sheriff and his deputies go in pursuit as the truckers head for the state line.
Then when a freelance photographer called Melissa, (played by Ali MacGraw) decides to hitch a lift with 'rubber duck' she soon realises that things are not what they seem .
With a difficult chase across Arizona in New Mexico it is not long before several more truckers join the pursuit, creating the mile long 'CONVOY' of truckers, connected only by the C.B. radio. (This is where the C.B. jargon takes over the movie as us mortal people lose track slightly of what the truckers are talking about).
Rubber Duck is pursued by the police from many counties and as the news breaks along the C.B. airwaves it is not long before he becomes a sort of folk hero, with all the support from the truckers.
As arrests are made and trouble occurs the movie rolls on….

Not a bad movie, even better if you are or ever have been a C.B. fanatic.
It has everything that a movie of this calibre and date has to offer. There are no special effects so the movie relies on acting and the ability of the cameramen to follow truckers along a vast desert.
It has the usual action, comedy, a bit of drama and the usual romantic encounter. The soundtrack merges with the movie quite well and seems to give the viewer a little more entertainment.
As the movie rolls on and the 'convoy' of trucks grows, snaking along the arid track towards its destination, it can become a little repetitive and with the C.B. chatter the audience will lose their way slightly.
Would I recommend this movie…..? Hmmm… that's a difficult one. I enjoyed watching it the first time (but it was a good movie in its day and I did own a C.B), but when I watched it again years later I found it a little slow and predictable. If you own it but you haven't watched it yet and you're bored one Sunday afternoon then slap it on and sit back….. ...it's a bit like marmite…you'll either love it or hate it.
Advantages: Kris Kristofferson...... Great Soundtrack...... Disadvantages: None I can think of.
...on a song by C.W.McCall, Convoy was made in 1978. Produced by Robert.M.Sherman, and Directed by Sam Peckinpah. It is all about the problems that truckers face when they travel across States, chased by "Bears" (Police), and make themselves a Convoy (line of trucks, lots of them). Burt Young plays the cheeky "Love Machine", but is also known as "Pig Pen" for the film, as he is carrying Live Pigs as his cargo. The film chases across 3 States, as "The ... ...arrest a trucker from the Convoy which is travelling across New Mexico, and well, all hell breaks loose......
The soundtrack is great, and it is a boost to the film. I Love this film, and have done for many years.... My baby brother grew up listening to it and watching it, and approaching his eighteenth birthday, he asked me if I could buy him a copy of it, as it was his favourite film....... Guess what he had for his birthday then ?? I think films ...

Advantages: Some good action scenes, good special effects Disadvantages: Very slow start
and I went away with a negative view of this much hyped film.
The only thing I can say regarding this film is don?t believe the hype, there are certain scenes in the film where you think disappointingly to yourself that it could have been so much better as the second half is far superior and I began to enjoy watching it. Sadly it doesn?t make up for the shoddy action and irrelevant first half. All I can say is don?t bother, lets hope Jon Favreau will do a better job with the sequel but I wont hold my breath.
