with the intention of toppling dictator Saddam Hussein and the Gulf War erupts. Alongside the countless troops thousands of journalists from every part of the world descend upon the region to secure potentially career-making coverage. From the director of Startup.com comes this bold and revealing documentary about Al-Jazeera the first commercial non-state-owned Arab satellite channel. Demonstrating how radically different versions of "the truth" of the Gulf War conflict have been told to viewers the world over this extraordinary film raises difficult and disturbing questions about the function of propoganda in Western society.

THE STORY Lee Ray Oliver is a Killer, sentenced to death for the brutal murder of a drug gang (with Mob connections) and shooting of 1 innocent member of the public who was "in the wrong place at the wrong time". He escapes execution by agreeing to test a mind-controlling drug that will supress his need to kill. Taken sectretly by a large drug development company to a test facility, Lee Ray undergoes supposed changes, mentally and in the way he looks.
As the tests move into 'phase 2' Lee Ray is re-introduced to society and goes in search of work.
Side effects trigger flashbacks of his past and abuse as a child and Oliver soon returns to his life of crime and his deadly compulsion as he is pursued by the mob and the drug Company, who are desperatly trying to cover up what they have done.
THE ACTORS: Ray Liotta-Lee Ray OLIVER im sure they included 'ray' in his characters name so that he knew it was him when the director said "Action". A poor performance to say the least.
Willem Dafoe-Dr Copeland- In contrast to Liotta, a very strong performance, but noticably over compensating for the rest of the cast.
Michelle Rodriguez- New Girlfriend of Lee Ray's, Not much to say here, just flutters her eyelids every now and again, very much a 'bit' part
OVERALL This film seems to struggle, possibly due to budget, but the story was one that interested me reading the back of the box in the dvd store. Would have been a good film, if maybe, Ray Liotta was replaced by a bigger star or well known bad guy actor. Ok for a rainy day when theres nothing on the TV, but I think that this will be on the TV sooner than we think.
Advantages: Great performances, credible, beautifully composed shots Disadvantages: Can we ever really know what drove him...?
~~~The Film~~~
'Control' is a film about Ian Curtis, the lead singer of Joy Division, who committed suicide in 1980. It charts his story from 1973 when he joins the band (originally called 'Warsaw') through the growing success of Joy Division and his increasing torment, to his death at the age of 23. It is a moving portrayal of this talented and troubled man.
The film is based on the book 'Touching from a Distance' by his wife, Deborah Curtis and is directed by Anton Corbijn, a photographer who worked with Joy Division and was responsible for many of the classic shots of this band with which we have come to be so familiar as well as the video for 'Atmosphere'. It is his directorial debut. The film is shot in black and white, basically because most of the images of Joy Division are in black and white, which was mainly down to ...
Advantages: Some great acting, a few good tunes thrown in, good cinematography Disadvantages: A bit slow
If you are thinking... how do I cheer myself up this weekend? I don't recommend watching Control - the film about Joy Division lead singer Ian Curtis and his life, culminating in his suicide of course! This is probably one of the most depressing films ever but then to anyone who knows the band, I suppose they'd expect little else.
Even in the early stages of the film when things are going fairly well.. Ian Curtis lacks enthusiasm and doesn't really seem as though he wants to be on the planet, in fact the only time you really see him smile is in the company of Belgian girl Anit. The filming is quite iconic, in black and white showing a few house and studio scenes, smokey pubs and the occasional concert, often the bleak side of life. Ian's wife Debbie is portrayed in a similar way, wearing dowdy 70s clothing with a portly figure before ...
