I find Container difficult to describe. There is no apparent plot, no real structure or sense of direction to the film. It is experimental in its approach. Shot in black and white, visually of a grainy, low quality. The film begins with a large man, dressed in women's clothing with his back against the wall with a female voiceover. And that's about the gist of it. Although, gist is too definitive a word!
Container predominantly ... ...movie... you will rave about Container to everyone..." as I became sleepy. It didn't happen and I can safely say it's not a film I would rave about!
Whatever experience the film was supposed to give, I didn't get it. It is so abstract, I found it difficult to comprehend anything about it. I haven't watched many 'arty' films before. I've since read that this experimental style is similar to films by Andy Warhol. Although I am ... more
When considering whether to watch a film, I alter from wanting to know how it is generally perceived by others, alternatively I avoid finding out anything. I can get bothered by the preconception.
Lukas Moodysson, the swedish director of the film Container, is someone I only became aware of after watching one of his earlier films, "Lilja 4-ever", recommended to me by a friend. A tragic, hard-hitting story that affected me in a way that only a select few films truly have done. I began to look at other films directed by the same man in the hope that I'd find some other cinematic gems. I now realise that it was at this point that my expectations had been raised too high.
Container predominantly shows an overweight man who, for most of the film, is dressed up as a woman, with a light coloured wig (presumably blonde, after all, it's in black and white), walking/stumbling/crawling around various buildings and apartments, and on streets. Sometimes this man is carrying a petite woman on his back for no apparent reason, sometimes he is crawling on the floor, or sitting in a bath, lying on a bed with other people. Various other 'extras' are seen sporadically during the film, pushing and touching the main character in various ways. Visually, I found this to be unsettling and a little disturbing although on screen there doesn't appear to be anything violent or overly sexual to note.
Throughout the entire duration of Container, there is no dialogue spoken by the actors or extras. The only words are spoken in English, very softly, as a commentary of sorts by Jena Malone, a young american actress known better for her roles in "Donnie Darko" and "Dangerous Lives of the Alter Boys". The soft and slow pace of her voice is dream-like and pertains to be that of the principal character (the man) that we see in the film. Mostly out of sync and out of context to the randomness that is happening on screen, the commentary appears to be 'his' thoughts, randomly spoken, on various subjects. Early on in the film, he (she) says "If I were a boy, I would sleep with Paris Hilton all day, but I'm not a boy. I'm a girl trapped inside the body of a boy".
There were brief moments where I felt I was getting to know something of the character portrayed on screen, only for the commentary to quickly digress into some other random thoughts. Ranging from religious undertones, sleeping with the Beckhams (!) or the Spice Girls (!). At one point the actress speaks about herself to the audience, almost a commentary in itself! "Hi! It's me speaking! Yes, Jena Malone, I'm an american actress, don't you know?" She doesn't quite say it like that, but in my opinion, what she does say is just as ludicrous! Then, having revealed who she is in real life, she goes straight back into the characters random thoughts. All spoken in the same, slow paced, soft, sleep inducing voice.
Despite its comparatively short duration of just over 70 minutes, I really struggled to watch this film to its end. The images on screen were just too random for me and of very little interest. Nothing compelling. At some points, I literally closed my eyes just to listen to the voice, which almost took on a hypnotic effect . I half expected to hear "you are enjoying this movie... you will rave about Container to everyone..." as I became sleepy.
Although I am fairly open minded, I don't think I'll be watching anything like it in the near future. I'm spent!
If you like a film to have some sort of structure, plot, a sense of direction or perhaps just to be entertained, I would advise you to avoid Container. Whereas if you like a viewing challenge, give it a go.
Extras
The DVD has a 27 minute featurette: "Inside the mind of Lukas Moodysson". Perhaps rather foolishly, I didn't watch it. If I'd had the stamina, I gather that it does try to explain some of the reasoning behind the film. Frankly, I'd lost patience and returned the DVD back to the rental store!
Advantages: Very moving, funny when it's supposed to be Disadvantages: A few shoddy special effects
Wow.
Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman at their best here, they work together so well that they create a huge engaging feeling that holds you close throughout the duration of the film. This film is a huge success in my view, very very very sad and very funny also (of course not at the same time - I'm not that sadistic).
I can tell that the director, Rob Reiner, has worked tremendously hard on this flick. It has received thousands of positive reviews from sites like IMDB.com and Rotten Tomatoes (to get a good review on Rotten Tomatoes you have to have produced something nigh on miraculous!). It has also received three nominations, such as for a Grammy and a Golden Reel Award.
The DVD, released by Warner Home Video, contains a possiblity of widescreen and full-frame aspect ratios. As for the quality, it is sharp and clear with very ...

Prolific Swedish director Lukas Moodysson follows the critical acclaim bestowed upon his previous films TOGETHER, LILYA 4-EVER and A HOLE IN MY HEART with CONTAINER, his most experimental film to date. Jenna Malone (DONNIE DARKO, COLD MOUNTAIN) stars in this stirring drama with strong religious overtones.
