story, actors, effects or general presentation in this adaptation of a Michael Crichton novel about an expedition into deep, dark Africa that runs into an unknown race of killer apes. The big monkeys attack and attack and attack and have to be fought off with machine guns and lasers--that's pretty much the story, except there's probably an even better one behind "fourth Ghostbuster" Ernie Hudson's bizarre decision to speak with a British accent. While Marshall wants us to root for the human characters, they're all so obnoxious and unbelievable you can't help but feel lousy for the poor apes when they get chopped to bits just for defending their homes against these twerps. If you're not feeling enough environmentalist ire these days, watch this and get angry.--Tom Keogh

I have watched this movie many times based on a novel by Michael Crichton. This film can be described as slightly strange I am still some times left thinking what I liked about the film. It has a straight forward plot It is a story of an African mountain gorilla called Amy who's been taught sign language by a young scientist and is being returned to the jungles of the Congo during which that cross paths with a research team sent in to the jungle of Africa to find a rear diamond, as you can imagine there are lots of obstacles in the African jungle. There are all types of animals one type in particular, its some kind of super gorilla.
This film has a very fictional and adventurous feel to it some of the accents leave much to be desired, the usual over emphasis an American doing an English accent! This is a very light hearted watch-able film. I don't get the sense this film was made to be taken to seriously. It has a strange way of mixing this theme about the jungle a rare diamond and killer monkeys together to make a watch-able movie that does not take it self seriously.
An interesting part of the plot is about the gorilla named Amy that has been educated to communicate with humans using sign language the gorilla is equipped with a voice computer that verbalizes it's sign language using space aged computer technology.
Accents to watch out for are Tim Curry's Romanian accent, he also seems to have something to hide which becomes apparent as the story progresses. I have to say when ever watching this film I am always left thinking Tim's character is going to say 'im not really Romanian' his accent is that bad.
Joe Don Baker, is the head of the BIG TIME organisation that wants will do any thing to get its hands on this precious diamond so there are kinds of power struggles between the naturists and the capitalist as you can imagine! The capitalists want to go as far as taking over the whole rain forest. There is a lot of action in the movie by the time you get to the end the special effects are quite good. Who will come out on top the nature or greed.
I think the film is fairly well done it feels a bit far fetched at times, most notably the ridiculous accents on display and a weirdness about the films credibility some times I was left think do these actors really take them selves serious, the film doesn't really have the most well known actors. But the actors that we are treated with do a good enough job with the script they are given. I have not watched this film for a while maybe I will.
Advantages: Its a fun film to watch Disadvantages: Tim Curry's accent
...the book by Michael Crichton, Congo is the sort of film you should only watch if you're not looking for realism, but just a fun action romp for an afternoon's video viewing.
The basic story is about an expedition that goes into the jungles of Africa, supposedly to set free an ape reared by a Univerity and taught to sign. Unbeknown to the University professor and his ape is a big bad company wanting to get its hands on some priceless diamonds. When ... ...by a bunch of killer apes. Well, I did warn you that it was a fun action film!!!
The cast are largely unknown, apart from Ernie Hudson (Ghostbusters) and Tim Curry (Rocky Horror Show) - however, Tim Curry does indeed get the oscar for the worst ever Romanian accent on film!!! Generally the film is OK - but if you're looking for serious action stuff then steer clear. Its fun, even comedic in parts and the story is totally unbelievable - its a shame ...

Advantages: Good entertainment on a rainy day, Hudson is great, good gorilla attax Disadvantages: But crap really!!
...on the Michael Crichton book, Congo is one of those films that tries to be good, but isn't. As with Crichtons book, Congo is about a team of scientists who venture into teh Congo jungle and teh lost xcity of Zinj, to try to rescue the team that went before them, and was killed by gorilla- like creatures. They take along with them a gorilla fluent in sign language, who obviously saves the day.
Starring as Dylan Walsh as Dr. Peter Eliot and Laura ... ...(Ernie Hudson) who steals the yhow, closely followed by the talented gorilla team. The effects are good, and the SFX team does well in making the gray gorillas vicious and murderable. The big attack scene towards the end is pretty cool, as the team gets picked off one by one, until they are forced back into ione little cave. How the survivors actually escape is actually quite ludicrous, and stryas too far from Crichtons novel. You'll know what I ...

...abstract. Both of which Congo definitely isn't. It isn't even saved when we get to the nasty big white carnivorous apes because by then we are so sickened by the baby Gorilla's sweet and schmaltzy antics that we want the nasty ones to eat it and every one else in the film (including of course the director). Unfortunately this doesn't happen. 'nough said. ...
