Confidence was the exact feeling i had when i saw this and parted with three of my english pounds to the lady behind the counter at Blockbuster a few years ago. Although the film had fallen under my movie radar, i saw the cast and thought that this film at least would be good enough to keep me entertained for the evening, it turned out to be more than that. A rental turned into a purchase, a purchase turned into me lending it out which led to other purchasing and talking about it. Any film that can pull off some good twists is worth watching in my opinion, this is definately one of them.
PLOT -
At the start of the film we meet Jake, our lead character who is dead, good start right! He narrates briefly as to how he ended up being dead and learn that he is the leader of a confidence trickster crew or a group of grifters. As we learn that cons are Jakes main source of income we get an insight into why someone would want to make him dead. We are led into a bar where a con is taking place, the 'mark' who the crew are attempting to rob is associated with a crime lord called The King. To pay his due, Jake must take on the biggest scam of his career and in the meantime consider who he can trust and who he should avoid, all with confidence!
CHARACTERS -
Jake (Edward Burns - Saving Private Ryan). A smooth, sophisticated conman who has everything he needs, good looks, good clothes, multiple ids and a trustworthy crew of fellow grifters helping him make his money. He is the leader and the man with the knowledge, he at times narrates to the audience to make sure that everyone is understanding what is going on and presents himself to be a very confident (suprise), approachable and suave character.
Lily (Rachel Weisz, Constant Gardner) is a low level independant con artist who normally works the local nightclubs using her sexuality and flirty nature to lure men into her grasp. Her run ins with Jake give him the idea of recruiting her as another crew member, although relatively unknown he places trust in her when given a larger job by the King. Her various attributes are valuable in assisting the previously all male crew. As the only female in the movie, she is seen as Jakes love interest.
Gordo (Paul Giamatti - Sideways) is part of Jakes crew and a trusted and loyal friend. He knows his role in the team very well but shows signs of nervousness when bigger risks are taken on. He also provides some comic relief in what is quite a dark thriller with his over reactions, story telling and little comments towards other crew members.
Miles (Brian Van Holt, S.W.A.T) is part of Jakes crew and loves living the high life after each and every con. As probably the youngest member (ages never mentioned) he enjoys the risks and the rewards that come with it.
Winston 'The King' King (Dustin Hoffman, Meet the Fockers) is a crime lord who only Gordo knows anything about. He has ADHD which influences his behaviour with Jake and his soldiers but has a major con on his mind against one of his old rivals Morgan Price
Special Agent Gunther Butan (Andy Garcia, Godfather III) has been tracking Jake for years and is determined to finally catch him in the act. He is a thoughtful and intuative agent who can sometimes pre-determine Jakes next move. Wears an awful hat.
OTHER CHARACTERS -
Lupus (Franky G) is one of the Kings soldiers Omar Manzano (Luis Guzman) and Lloyd Whitworth (Donal Logue) are bent LAPD officers on Jake's payroll Morgan Price (Robert Forster) is The Kings old school rival with a multi million dollar business
PERFORMANCES -
Unfortunately due to the fast pace we take during the film, characters backgrounds are rarely touched on, this in my opinion, lets the film down slightly as we have no knowledge of what these people have done historically. We know as much of Jakes history in conning as other characters do plus it would have been good to know more about The King.
As you can imagine, Dustin Hoffman is quality. His change in behaviour due to his ADHD keeps those around him on edge. He demands respect in not only his character but you can see it in the other actors, they are in awe.
Rachel Weisz's performance of a seductive Lily is also good to watch and you can totally understand why men fall at her feet. Other characters such as Jake and Gordo are played well, basically what you would expect to see from Burns and Giamatti, unfortunately Andy Garcia looks uncomfortable as Agent Butan, his attire is shocking and i feel this character could have been more dangerous, overall he just looks and feels out of place, maybe that was the directors intention??
TECHNICAL STUFF -
Directed by James Foley who also directed the films Perfect Stranger and The Corruptor. Running time 97 minutes Special features include Commentaries from director, writer and cast members, deleted scenes, interviews with cast members and anatomy of a scene featurette
OVERALL -
Confidence is never going to be a great film but it is a stylish, sleek and sexy con movie. As mentioned before the lack of background to certain characters leaves you wanting to know more about them but its a clever film with clever twists performed by a really good cast. Its definitely worth a watch.
Advantages: Standard fare for genre, good plot twists at end, solid performances all round Disadvantages: Standard fare for genre, little depth, nothing 'special'
Confidence (James Foley, 2003) is a slick crime thriller in the style of the Ocean's Eleven films or The Thomas Crown Affair. It takes a slightly 'grittier' look at the subject, but still contains enough plot twists to keep you guessing (and give you a sore head on the first few watches!) and manages to be an enjoyable grifter romp.
Story:
The story follows a group of confidence tricksters, or grifters as they are called in the film, as they try ... ...genre.
Characters / Performances:
Confidence certainly has some star actors and actresses, with Edward Burns, Rachel Weisz, Andy Garcia, Pail Giamatti (who I am sure is in everything. Ever.) and good old Dustin Hoffman. None of the characters give poor performances, Weisz has in my opinion done better, but this is by no means a bad performance by her. I would have to agree with other reviewers who have said that this is perhaps Burns' best piece ...

...been on TV.
So, Confidence just isn’t her kind of film. But for someone who hasn’t had 50+ years to catch up on all the old Philip Marlowe, wise-talking, mouthy, hard-boiled good-guy criminal films, and who actually likes a thriller now and again, would this still stand up?
Well, unfortunately, no. It comes to our cinema screens at an unfortunate time for it, when David Mamet’s Heist is on Sky for "free". And while even that isn’t supposed to be ... ...good yarn. Theediscerning was conscious during this film that the only reason Dustin Hoffman could have had for making this was as compensation that he had never been asked to work for Mamet on such a thriller. (Also, as Foley directed Mamet's Glengarry Glen Ross without Hoffman, it begins to smack of a cashing in on an old promise.)
And on further reflection, on the way home and while typing this up with the film fresh in mind, your author was ...

...better in this role. Confidence was trying to be something it wasnt and it tried really hard to be that something.
I also think that they wasted the talents of Dustin Hoffman and Andy Garcia who are excellent actors in their own right. Dustin Hoffman's character was odd and quite creepy and Andy Garcia is introduced into the film quite late on and looked so grubby I didn't even realise it was him until a bit later in the film.
Rachel Weisz is ok ... ...that you wish they had just mae her keep her British accent. She doesn't seem to have the sassiness or the style that is required and quite frankly she seemed a lot better in "The Mummy".
There have been too many films that have done this type of con with a twist such as "The Usual Suspects", "Reservoir Dogs", "The Grifters" and "House Of Games". The only difference is that these films have done it so much better and with a lot more thought.
Where ...

...I have been obsessed by confidence films. So sorry if this review is a little biased however if you like twist, cons, tricks, and snappy dialogue this film is up your street. I think it is a trait with confidence films that it demands 1, charismatic characters and 2, a story line that makes you think and then go ‘arrh I get it.’, at the end. Advantages: Ed Burns NOT angst-ridden? It works! Disadvantages: Weak plot, only just saved at the end
...hold up playing a cool confidence trickster? Surprisingly - he pulls it off.
Dustin Hoffman is entertaining and Andy Garcia is for a moment, unrecognisable. Rachel Weisz smoulders just a little too much - but overall the cast pulls it off.
Shame about the story. There is less originality here than a fake LV bag full of fake Gucci watches in faketown. Not once are you left with that sense of satisfaction when anything clever happens in a film. Then ... ...bit too long. Which is never good for a sub-100 minute film.
And that was also too short for a review. So here goes - the film starts with Burns's character Jake Vig in a tricky situation, guns, blood, the lot. The rest of the film is told in snippets of flashback.
Hoffman's character, The King, has been a victim of one of Jake's schemes. The King, you understand, is not to be messed with - a big man in the underworld. Not a good move, Jake.

Advantages: Gentle stretching exercises, great for toning up wobly bits! Disadvantages: This might not suit you if you want something more energetic
energetic. I believe that it will help people burn the same amount of calories in a much more fun and less boring manner than the usual leg kicks or sit ups!
In addition, some of my friends who tried my DVD out also reported back by saying that it helped them feel a lot more confident, especially in their personal lives. Won't go into much detail here!
Overall, I would advice you to get that DVD if you want to tone up your wobbly bits and build up confidence and feel sexy and secure in your own skin.
Thanks for reading!

When i first brought this fitness dvd i wasnt sure if it was any good or not. i had read some good reviews on amazon but there were also a few bad reviews.
i jhave to say those bad reviews were wrong because this fitness dvd is one of my favourie fitness dvds. The reason why it is my favourite is because it is so easy to follow and it acutally works. after using this dvd for a week i noticed that i lost quite a bit of weight, especially round my stomach and thighs. I felt more toned and it gave me more confidence to wera skirts in the summer to show off my brand new figure. I alo felt very relaxed after doing the dvd.

intention of releasing new material in the future. I couldn't really recommend this DVD to anyone becasue, even if you don't own the previous DVD, the Bolton Halls performance is a far superior, more confident one from Peter. The only 'bonus' on this DVD is the inclusion of the Armarillo music video, and to be perfectly honest I don't think anyone would call that a bonus. ...

DVD Description
Ed Burns gives arguably the best performance of his career in James Foley's fast-moving CONFIDENCE. Foley, who directed David Mamet's GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS, has learned much from his mentor, making a who's-conning-whom film worthy of the master of the genre. Burns plays Jake Vig, the leader of a small group of con artists who unknowingly steals money from a sleazy but powerful underworld lord known as King. In order to get his dough back, King forces Vig and his gang to pull off a nearly impossible con that could get nearly everyone involved killed. Meanwhile, Vig is being watched closely by a stubbly federal agent who is following the money. Foley has put together a terrific cast, including Paul Giamatti and Rachel Weisz as part of Vig's crew, Andy Garcia as the fed, Dustin Hoffman as King, and Luis Guzman and Donal Logue as two cops on the take. As in Mamet's films, the audience will have to keep guessing whose side the characters are on right up until the final shot, never quite knowing who is conning whom.
