What can I say about Only Fools & Horses that you don't know already? Probably nothing but if you're a fan...or not, this is an absolute peach of a buy. I didn't buy it, my wife got it for me as a present and its one of the best prezzies ever! It comes in a nice box with a "Del Boy" style cheesy pattern. The contents of the box slide out to reveal a book type storage with 4 discs every other page. There are 25 discs in total comprising of series 1-7, the Christmas specials 1986-93, the Christmas trilogy 1996 and the Christmas specials 2001-2003. There is also a final disc called, "The story of only fools & horses" which has behind the scenes footage.
The pages are laid out in a kind of photo journal with a letter attached on page two from Del Boy to his son giving him a bit of history to look back on. As you flip the pages, on the left there is a brief synopsis of each episode from 1 to 4 with the discs on the adjacent page. Flip again and you have series 5 and a synopsis for the Christmas specials and so on in chronological order.
I saw a couple of reviews before on DVD sites and some people complained that disc 3 (series 3) wasn't made properly, no picture on the disc to be precise, like the others. If you look more closely at the little Post-it note underneath from Del you will see this is deliberate. Buy the set if you want to read it :P
I have to tell you, this box set just gets funnier the more you watch it. The icing on the cake for me was seeing some episodes I had missed when it was on TV. I watched the first 4 series and went back to the first one again before watching them all in an "only Fools & Horses Marathon" over a couple of weeks and I'm ready to do it again. I'm not one for watching the same stuff over and over but with the exception of the Laurel & Hardy complete box set, this is the only other one I've watched over and over.
It's great to go back to the beginning and find little snippets of information the characters say about their past that you had missed or forgotten and Del's "Mum said on her deathbed" quirks crack me up especially when Rodney after hearing this over and over say's, "Mum didn't half say a lot when she was dying". Ok, I'm laughing now just writing about it and I'm in the mood for watching again, it really DOES have that effect.
This is by far the best comedy ever to come out of Britain and as far back as it goes, the gags never become outdated. Del and Dave...er...Rodney are truly the best double act since Laurel & Hardy and it will take a lot to top them. There's nothing today that comes close on either side of the Atlantic but I don't care, I have my box set!
