Commando is one for the die hard Arnie fan. Few others will truly appreciate the the gloriously cheesey, tongue in cheek, unashamed violence that characterised the Governators early career. Thats not to undersell Commando- it is without doubt a classic film.
The plot is simplistic- Arnie is a retired special forces colonel who is blackmailed into taking out a small country's president by a political rival in exchange for his daughters life. Naturally Arnie is having none of it and sets about killing everyone who is even vaguely connected with the plot, and anyone else who gets in his way.
The stereotypical film critic will tell you that the plot is childlike, the direction flawed, the dialogue neanderthal and the acting laughable. However, Schwarzenegger's strengths are not in his acting ability, but in his on-screen charisma and the fact that he obviously doesnt take himself too seriously. Its a gem as long as you bare this in mind. Oh and look out for Bennet- surely the gayest villain ever to bless the silver screen. There are several classic examples of Arnie's characteristic power fighting- and it is all gloriously over-exagerrated with the big man using a combination of knives, pipes, circular saws, rocket launchers, and machine guns to despatch the rather forgetful bad guys.
The dvd is somewhat limited, and the price reflects this. It just has the basic trailer and scene access with the ever present foreign subtitles.
