Full review

I've watched films about America's involvement in the Vietnam war before, but this isn't told in Vietnam, it's told in America. There's no blood and guts. The horrors are there for all to see, but they aren't shoved up in your face in terms of plastic blood and special effects.

******
Jane Fonda plays the wife (Sally Hinde) of a newly promoted major in the American Marines, played by Bruce Dern (Bob Hinde). Sally's the model partner, who loves, and is proud of, her husband and his job. Bob's champing at the bit to get out there and do his stuff, alongside his good friend 'Dink'. Now. Dink's girlfriend is Vi and she meets up with Sally when they're both waving their loved ones off to war, and the two strike up what seems to be an unlikely friendship at first.

Getting bored with sitting around all day, Sally takes a voluntary job at the local Vietnam Veteran's hospital. There she meets someone she went to school with, except this time, Jon Voight (Luke Martin), is a paralysed, bitter, mostly drunken man who rails at his life.

Her friendship with Vi gradually grows and Sally is introduced to Vi's brother, also a victim of the war, who is now mentally unbalanced by what he's been involved with.

(At this point in the plot, I have to leave you. Not because I want to be cruel, but you have to see this film for yourself, and I can't bear people who give endings away).
******

The acting from each and every person in this film is sublime, and the fact that the film respects the anti-war subject by, apart from the main actors, using real sufferers from the war, not people pretending they've been shot up, crippled, blinded, paralysed or whatever, these are the real people, with their real problems, sometimes taking over the film with clearly unscripted discussions and remarks. It's so good you almost feel like the fly upon the wall. You cannot help but be absorbed by the kind of treatment that this film gets, this is their story and it's handled with total sensitivity and respect for that very fact.

I would like to say further that this has probably one of the best soundtracks I have ever heard. Obviously being set in the 60's we have tracks like Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit", Steppenwolf's "Born To Be Wild", Rolling Stone's "Out Of Time", The Beatles "Strawberry Fields Forever", Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth", Jimi Hendrix "Manic Depression", Aretha Franklin "Save Me" playing throughout the film. The matching of tracks to scenes is done with skill and never stands out as anything other than sympathetic.

This film is thought-provoking, sad, respectful, moving, romantic, blunt, eye-opening, honest, brilliantly written, brilliantly acted, and just about the damned finest Anti-Vietnam film to ever come out of Hollywood.

There's nothing schmaltzy, sensationalistic nor over-sentimental about this film, and Jon Voight's acting skills were honoured with the Oscar for Best Actor. Which is excellent, but they should have handed Oscars to EVERYONE in the film.

It's beyond any adjective I can lamely tag on to get the idea across that this is really and truly a great, g r e a t film.

Rodneys' life is on the rocks
Review of Only Fools And Horses - Rodney Come Home (DVD) by  blissman70

Advantages: Good humour, great acting and some fine scenarios
Disadvantages: not up to the usual standard (IMO)

...of the other episodes, the show wouldn?t be as popular if it wasn?t for the supporting cast, including Patrick Murray as Mickey Pearce, who is still more childish than an excited three year old in a sweet shop. In all, although maybe not the best story line Sullivan has penned but there are still enough laughs and some brilliant scenarios to keep the audience happy, maybe wanting to add it to your DVD collection. So if you do want to get a copy of this special episode then get it from www.amazon.co.uk for less than £7.00.Unfortunately, as with all Only fools DVDs, there are no extras on the discs, but ut is still well worth the small price to pay for what you get.... A little-known gem
Review of Rosamunde Pilcher's Coming Home / Rosamunde Pilcher's Nancherrow (DVD) by  chazzero

Advantages: Fantastic cast, very engaging story - all-round good 2-part tv drama
Disadvantages: Emily Mortimer, some dubbing

...Please note, I have the VHS edition of it so am only reviewing the main feature itself, not any extras etc. which may be on the DVD. Coming Home is a truly excellent ITV two-part drama. It is a dramatisation of the book with the same name by Rosamunde Pilcher (which I haven't read - sorry!) The drama is set in 1930s/1940s Cornwall, and centers around Judith Dunbarr (Keira Knightly and Emily Mortimer). Her family move to Singapore when she is 11 or 12 and she is left in England going to boarding school, staying with her aunt Louise (Penelope Keith). There, she meets her best friend Loveday Carey-Lewis (Katie Ryder Richardson), whose (Joanna Lumley) own a lush stately home in the countryside - and have lots of money. The plot then leads on to Judith and Loveday growing up, switching actresses and living through World War II, but... Read review

Brotherly Love with Disastrous Consequences
Review of Only Fools And Horses - Rodney Come Home (DVD) by  blondgem

Advantages: great sitcom
Disadvantages: -

...Never being able to get a traders license from any council in London, the start of Rodney Come Home begins with Del and Uncle Albert in not so much familiar environment but waiting for the security guards to change shifts in the local shopping centre, so they can open up that famous suitcase and start selling their hooky goods. In the meantime, Rodney is now a high flying executive in the position of Head of the Computer Section working for Cassandra's father and is no longer associated with Del Boy and his dodgy dealings. Del Boy seems to be in a stable relationship with Racquel, who came back from America just to be with him and Rodney is a happily married man to Cassandra or is he? Things seem to be awkward between Rodney and his ambitious wife, who seems to be committed to one thing and one thing only, the bank. With an upset... Read review

DVD Description

When Sally Hyde's (Jane Fonda) husband, a ramrod-straight marine captain, Bob Hyde (Bruce Dern), is sent to Vietnam, she leaves the isolated world of the officer's quarters and begins volunteer social work at the veterans hospital. There her unthinking support of the war and her blindness to its effects are challenged by meeting the crippled men struggling to recover, psychologically as well as physically, from their time in battle. Many, like Luke Martin (Jon Voight), now a paraplegic, are embittered and full of unfocused, uncontrollable rage, which he takes out on the prim, controlled Sally. Interestingly, they went to the same large high school, but she was a pretty, popular cheerleader type and he was just a guy in the back of the class. Gradually, as she changes politically (always signaled by changes in hair and fashion) and he recovers emotionally, they become friends and then lovers. This causes a sexual awakening in Sally that furthers her transformation from a repressed wife to an independent woman. Then her husband comes home.
Hal Ashby's film, with its classic rock soundtrack and lush photography by Haskel Wexler, submerged its politics in a warm nostalgia, although it was made just a few years after the war ended. It's theme of individual transformation, both political and sexual, struck a chord with baby boomer audiences who all felt, to varying degrees, that they had done the same thing. Both Fonda and Voight received the 1978 Academy Awards for their strong acting.
