Cooper could have an audience in his pocket before he even said a word. Then the jokes would flow, the tricks fall flat and an open-mouthed Cooper would reduce them once more to helplessness. Advantages: A new view of Hip Hop. Great lyrics - something different. Disadvantages: A few weak tracks.
...singing in a pub. But other than that it is OK, again, I do not think there is anything special with the lyrics to this song.
Rappers Battle
Musically very early 90's sounding to start with, with a more modern overlapping drum beat. This song brings in the beginning of good lyrics. Much more poetic, although better is to come. The song handles the difference between the brain and skin, and the way skin remembers "deep abrasions" but the brain doesn't "deep conversations" and it makes a rather good point. The end of the song is rubbish, after Pip has finished the music continues and has some random crap over the top of it.

There are a large amount of varied clips on the DVD, which make it fast-moving and includes a lot of material, which is good, but personally, I would have preferred fewer and longer pieces. The idea of just an apparently random selection of parts of interviews and sketches doesn't really work, in my opinion. I would have liked to see a more rigid format, either with a chronological review of the work or a documentary style DVD with illustrative clips.
This is the latest BBC DVD on Frankie Howerd, as it was released last year and is currently available from Amazon for £8.98. The ComedyGreats collection also includes similar releases on other comedians such as Les Dawson, Tony Hancock, Spike Milligan and TommyCooper.
As for this Frankie Howerd one, it is definitely worth having for any fans, but I doubt it is the best compilation out...
